The Cold Steel “drop forged” line of fixed blades are great cheapskate heroes. All made from 52100 carbon steel and absolutely bulletproof. I bought the “Hunter” model for under $50 as an apocalypse knife.

I agree completely. I recently rediscovered my 9.5" Drop Forged Bowie and have had fun playing with it.

440a, G-10, 3.25” blade, 7.87” overall, liner lock, extended tang. The heat treat on this knife is excellent. It is hair splitting sharp and will take an edge as well as anything I own, almost. Perfectly centered and as smooth of an action as anything I own. $7 from a big knife store. I’ve never had a RR modern folder and thought I would take a chance on such a cheapo price, as needed something for the glovebox in my car. What a surprise. It’s in my regular rotation now. This knife has some decent weight (not too light) and the overall size is really nice. I’d buy it again.
Sidebar: you can still get these for about $7 on a couple sites.

Oh lord I got one of them and the D2 version and they are so frustrating, super annoying soft steel, and the D2 one have very very low quality d2 that have inconsistent heat treat that gets rolling/ flat spots that need constant attention after a day of cutting open
Cattle feed bags and hay netting
The secret to the gray one is keep it toothy about 300 grit and running it over a ceramic rod or CBN stick to keep it cutting
Shouldn’t complain about 3 knife for $25 but they are frustrating if you’re used to a semi decent steel edc , my Ganzo 440c China knives have been golden in comparison !
Another skip imo is the Schrade SCH223 of unknown Chinese steel ( maybe 9Cr13 ?)
For cheap Ganzo has dialed in their 440c & D2 , but the G2 scales make them kinda heavy for a pocket knife

I have one in my hunting bag, very very great knife, it needs a little TLC by putting on a paracord handle
My wet bloody hand froze to the handle when it got below zero, it now has a boot lace covered handle, problem solved . Plus I now have a pair of boot laces ready in my pack

Hultafors GK. Practically unbreakable knife. 10€ from local hardware store.
Looking to make my own sheath for it later on.
Very nice! Is it true that the steel in these is tempered a little harder than your average Mora?

Hard to say. I think the GK is made of SK5 and are definitely bit thicker than average mora (reminds me of mora heavy duty). Also the blade has quite prominent bevel so they are not zero grind.
My plumber cousin also vouches for these as he used Hultafors knives for all kinds of abusive tasks like chiseling toilet bowls off with hammer etc. 😁
Also Joe X - wether people like his methods or not - had hard time breaking these.
Now of course every knife is compromise in something but I’d be pretty happy having this one to the next nuclear war.

Well, fiddlesticks. Now I want a Hultafors knife.
