Chinese belt grinder for cheap?

Well, I wouldn't say you're without cost effective options here in Europe.

Here are a couple of choices for you to look into.

1. For about £1000 you'll get a nice grinder (with IP66 VFD and 2 hp motor) from Nick in Greece. I have two of them and I'm very happy. He can also help you with all accessories you'd need.

2. You've also got this guy in Croatia, I've bought wheels from him, no problem at all.

His prices are very competitive.

3. This is also an alternative, I've heard good things about this guy in Bulgaria.

Stromberg, the first option seems good, but I don't understand why you would even list the second & third options! The second option is an almost exact replica of the KNG. Hmmm.. And the third option IS AN EXACT copy of Wuertz's TW-90!! What a set of balls on that low life!! NO THANKS!

What is it with other countries copying US designs and passing them off as their own???

You know, I replicated Travis Wuertz's SG-1 surface grinder attachment from photos, video and a hell of a lot of research! But I did it FOR MY OWN USE!!! I would never dream of making his design and passing it off as my own, for a profit! Just low down how some people have absolutely NO moral compass or sense of integrity.

Jesse, it sounds like you did so much work you could almost have built from scratch. I'm glad you've got it working good. That VFD, is it sealed? OR - are there air ventilation vents on the side?

Thanks. I am very tempted to build a new frame also. Another time maybe. :)

No its not sealed - unsurprisingly considering its a pretty cheap VFD. They can be ordered off ebay for something like $150 Aussie dollars. It has an internal fan that sucks air in through the bottom and exhausts it through the top. There are also slotted vents on the side exposing all the electronics within.

Bummer, my open frame Chinese VFD has a fan at the top that sucks air in at all the other places allowing me to put filters over those places to prevent metal dust come entering the enclosure. Perhaps a filter over the bottom would be easy to do?

... Since they're designed for the knifemaking world (with USA in mind) why in the world would they use 82" belts rather than 72" belts?
I use 82" belts too. Uhm, it's not exactly 82" it is 2000 mm. In metric system is 2000 mm nicer than 2080 mm. :)

Here in Europe we aren't as fortunate sadly :) Shipping from the US is around 300-500$ depending on what you buy. The only commercially available alternative here would be a HAIM grinder, but that one would be around 2000-2500$ with the same attachments.
Where are You from? Are You member of the knife.cz website? There are some hobby makers who make grinders on good quality. I can recommend some of them.

Those are the wheels it comes with? Most use a 4/5” drive wheel and. 3/4” tracking. A 72 would probably work with the proper setup.

I was able to build this grinder through the Sayber OSG Forum all for about $800. I got 1.5hp motor, vfd, and had the cad file sent to local steel shop to have laser cut out. extremely easy to put together. The video below is before I aligned the wheels. No wobble now. So far so good. Just another option to look into maybe....

Thanks everyone for the opinions! I guess that this grinder is a no-no if i want something working fairly well OOTB.

To be frank I didn't know that I have this many alternatives in Europe, it is sad though that all of them are a fair bit pricier. But oh well, you get what you pay for. That TW-90 copy from Bulgaria seems really nice, if I would pay so much for a grinder, than I would get than one. Looks like I will have to save up and get a nicely working one instead of this Chinese one.
