Collins Machete

To me USING a vintage machete is the coolest part about owning one. If you you are buying it just to sell it (knowing that you can get more than what you paid) you might as well just buy up whatever they have in stock. I understand wanting to have a mint condition Collins for collectability and because it's cool, but in that case all you need is one and you can use the other.

That's why both Moonwilson and I own Fiddleback-modded 323's. ;)

But the history of the Legitimus Collins company is pretty rich, so I know I wouldn't mind having at least one to keep in like-new condition as a historical piece in addition to one I could beat on. :)

I would definitely like to see a chop off between the two and I think that the Imacasa Rozador looks like a great blade.

There's never a bad excuse to chop some stuff up!:thumbup::eek:

All I can say is my 323 eats through trees like there's no tomorrow.

Yeah, but we're talking about the 1068. That is the one he is deciding whether or not to use. I think that we are pretty much on the same page here though. ;) BTW I really love the mods fiddleback did. That is one beautiful machete! Great pics too

I feel you. I wish I had grabbed another 323 for that reason. I may pick up another 1068, but it will depend on if I get the 18" (forget the model # :)) and which I like better.

Yup. Definitely on the same page. ;)

I mentioned the Fiddleback 323's is because those are the vintage blades with significant deviation from the original product. So it WAS a pristine 323, but now it's cooler and...and...choppy....er.:p

Ya i'm starting to wish i had grabbed another 323 as well. Oh well i got one. And i'm eyeing out some micarta, and trying to figure out how to go about putting micarta slabs on the 323. Those fiddlebacks are smooth. The 1068 handle is ROUGH, i'll def have to do something with it as well.

I've been wondering about changing the handle on my 323 as well, the riveted plastic is kinda crappy. I've never done anything like that before though, so it's kind of daunting.

I am digging this 1068. I wish I'd picked up another. There's no mistaking it- the 1068 is MAN'S machete. It wants to SMASH and CLEAVE! The handle does suck though. No wonder you see horn scales on most of the vintage Collins on the 'bay. A blade this mighty deserves better scales than the "whatever wood" things they shipped with. The full tang is nice- even if you managed to completely crack off the scales in the field, you could just wrap the thing with anything you had lying around, and it would still be functional.

There are plenty of custom makers here on the forums that I'm sure would be able to hook you up if you didn't want to mess with it yourself. It'll set you back several times more than the original machete though. Totally worth it, IMHO.

Did anyone order both the 18 and 20 inch blades? Looking at the numbers and labels on the site they seemed the same so I just ordered one of the 18". Pretty excited it will replace the trusty rusty one I have had since I was about 10 years old.

I actually plan on setting myself up to do that kind of work, hopefully within the upcoming year. I have some...interesting ideas but I'm keeping them close to my chest at the moment in case nothing comes of it all. Sssssh.... ;)

Forty I'am still looking My friend! I hope we could hook up and Chat again It was nice to Meet you! So,so Many

I'll try to drop by again sometime soon! It was nice seeing ya'! Good luck with the search! There are so many machete patterns to choose from. :D

I hate to bump a thread where I had the last post, but I just had a couple of Imacasas and a Hansa arrive in the mail today! Absolutely top notch machetes. Can't wait to sharpen them up and take them for a spin in the great outdoors!

You can't judge a book by its cover, but if I was to do so with these I'd say they're every bit as nice as a stock Collins, if not better since they don't have that rough forged finish (though it looks cool).

Nice! I've been looking at the Hansas. Which one did you get? The Aguila Lampon looks pretty nice. Which Imacasas did you order?

Actually, the Hansa I got just so happens to be the Aguila Lampon! :D

The Imacasas are the 22" Colima and the little 14.5" Colin w/sheath.

Words can't describe how nice these feel in the hand. I can't take pics right now, but I will soon (as well as some mad chop-itudinal in-the-field reviewing).

Sounds good. I'll be looking forward to it! I'm going to be getting to work on the edges of my Collins' soon. I can't wait to get out and use them.

I think i'm going to have to pick some of those imasca's up too. My wife was okay when i started acquiring pocket knives...she's started getting a little freaked out since the blades have jumped from 5" to 20"

More than you'd likely want to. :o

If you could find one. This batch of 323s (assuming they're the same as Fiddleback's) is the only one I've ever seen. Not to worry though- Imacasa still makes a mean machete. A good Imacasa will do anything these vintage Collins can- they just won't do it with as much STYLE. Although Imacasa's handles are vastly superior to Collins', so the point is debatable.

Joe confirmed for me that WAS the source for those. Aren't you glad you got yours when you did? ;) And you have to admit--a lot of the cool factor of the Collins is their history and that snazzy logo. :D

OOPS :o I feel like I may have trampled some toes here. Sorry I didn't mean to expose this and dry up the source for a Fiddleback modded one. But yes I'm glad I got mine when I did. I was also lucky enough to be able to snag a second to keep as a queen.

BTW: I'm not going to be buying one but I thought this was worth mentioning. I saw that Fiddleback is going to mod a couple of the 18" models and he said he was going to reshape the end to make a point. This will require the removal of a significant amount of steel. I don't know why it would need a tip, I think that he just thinks that people would want it that way. To me it would just throw off the balance of the design and probably make it a less effective chopper. Again I'm not buying one so this won't affect me, but I think he thinks that others will prefer it with this mod. What are your thoughts?
