Collins Machete

Personally I'd leave the original shape of the Collins and mod up a Imacasa Rozador if I was going to mess with the profile. Again, just from a historical significance point of view. :)

I agree with the historical significance aspect of things, but I also think that the Collins co. probably designed the blade for functionality. A mod like that will definitely affect how it performs. As is that machete (1077) should be a little powerhouse.

EDIT: Of course these are being modded to some extent irregardless of whether or not the profile is changed. So this is more a question of function rather than form. They will no longer be vintage Collins.

What I mean by the historical significance is exactly what you're saying--the piece performing and handling as it was originally intended. :)

Got my 1077 today and WOW its in amazing shape. I am extremely please with this purchase. Just need to touch up the edge a bit. What is the best way to sharpen this behemoth? What I have for sharpening equipment: Stones, Ark fine and random stone feels like fine/med, sharpmaker, Lansky System. Whats the best to use or should I get something else?

You want a bastard file. Something like the Nicholson "Handy file" ought to do nicely--it's what I use. :)

Just remember to only push with it--not rake it back and forth. Files only cut on the push stroke and if you pull with it it dulls the teeth and ruins the file right quick. ;)

Since I'm reading this thread and have little else to add I will share a tip I came up with for putting a very sharp convex edge on your machete.
Go to lowes/walmart ect and pick up a paint stir stick (free) and some wet/dry sandpaper. Wrap the sandpaper around your stir stick and secure the ends with rubberbands. Use this just like you would a file. The stick is just flexable enough to give a nice convex edge and the paper allows a keener edge than what you get with a file. I normally finish up with 400 or an 800 grit. This setup also weeighs next to nothing so you can keep it in your pack for later touchups on any of you edged tools.
I can post pics later if anyone is interested.

I also found a coat of turtle wax will keep your carbon steel machete from rusting as easily. I keep on on my four wheeler and it is constantly getting submerged here in the swamps. Since I waxed it rust hasn't been an issue.

get a file card for the house..... seriously files will last for ages if you maintain them... i also use a lansky puck , or the sharp maker stones by themselves and a few others... kinda once i get home i have a lotta options. even feild strops can be pretty nice to use depending on the amount of material your removing and what your fixing....

And if you don't want to buy a file card, just use an old toothbrush. :D
