blind willie johnson was more of a preacher. he was blind because of an angry girlfreind of his fathers when he was a child, a horrible occurnace. the song was about when his house burned to the ground, and without anywhere else go, him and his wife slept in the ashes. he later died of nmemonia having been refused entry to a hospital because of his blindness.
so when he says dark was the night - he means it more then most people will ever know. it has been called "the most transcendent peice of music in american history". i would have to agree...
