what you're seeing here is the material beginning to be removed from where the holes/divots aren't. Each row of divots is not only different in diameter, but different depth- the ones closest to the spine are the deepest. By drilling set depths into the material, I have a guide as to how deep I'll grind the fuller. Too deep and I'll end up with a hole through the blade, not deep enough and I'm wasting weight savings potential. This is just a practice run to ensure things will work out how I want them to, so I haven't removed all the material yet. The next step is to set things up so that the shape of the fuller is identical on both sides of the blade. Finicky stuff!

btw, bevels are ground to about 150 grit at this point
