Crosscut Saw Thread

Just wanted to thank everyone for this great post and all the useful info. I'm ready for the next step of sharpening. I've really enjoyed the process of restoring the saw so far. Can't wait to get up to the cabin and put this bad boy through it's paces.

What kind of wood will you be cutting?

If a #22, it has 6 gauges of taper, that's WAY crescent ground. A great feature for double bucking, light carry and negligible set, but that also was makes it floppy. I'll bet the center spine is practically a knife edge. As such, it wouldn't be my first choice for single bucking. The Royal Chinooks had much thicker steel on the tooth end and are less "wiggly". The taper ground Simonds 520 is even stiffer. Any reason you didn't buy a big one man? You can find those up to 5' on eBay.

I really appreciate your reply and knowledge! I actually do own a couple decent one man saws. I would just really like to own a good two man saw that I can use by myself. I would love to find a 5 foot 1 man as well and I always keep my eyes open for one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to ship.

Shipping is the least of the cost. A five foot saw would ship most anywhere in the US for about 30.00 or 60.00 RT. Getting it filed and getting the right handles will be more than that. Gives you incentive to learn the filing process.

What filing angles and set would you suggest?
I shoot for a 28°-30° bevel angle, sometimes steeper. If the saw has any taper to the grind, 0.012" is plenty of set. If a flat plate 0.015" or more. Warren Miller put steeper bevels on his softwood saws. Racing saws are sub-20° bevels. I roll the file as I work toward the top to put a slight curve to the tooth to prevent finishing with a weak point. I can't post pics on this site but the crosscut saw manual has a lot of these examples.

Thanks much!

Overall length or length between the holes?
Cuts in one direction only?

Have you compared to Millers Falls "BLU-MOL" power hacksaw blades?

Bob
Hi Bob!
Great to be back on the forum!

I did quickly and dismissed the power hack blades as a bit more squared and shorter but i did not give them a good side by side.

Ithinkverydeeply came up with a possibility of an ice saw last night.
I will try to steel that image and post it here.

I couldn't find that shape blade by Millers (or any other company) either. 😞

...and shorter
In the ballpark though?

A possibility. In poking around, I could not find that Millers made/sold ice saws.

A piece of ice (or whatever) to be cut will be limited in width by the distance between the handles leaving some back-and-forth room for sawing.

Curious saw.

The search continues. Thank you Bob

this might sound kind of dumb, but i think it might be someone's project, like a PVC cutter or a soft metal?

Not dumb

I too think it may be someone's one off in need for the time.
I wondered if it might be made for fun or a crosscut saw for the children, like dads...
Was it made to buck firewood, the smaller rounds...
For now shes up on the wall just hanging out 😏
