Down Under Knives Outback Bowie

I don't want to crap on your thread in any way, if you're happy with the knife that's great but I felt I needed to add my two cents worth.

Just in case anyone is in any doubt these knives have absolutely no connection whatsoever with anything or anyone in Australia, despite the company's attempts to suggest this by the names. Their website is actually registered in Norway. The knives are made, as they put it, in "Asia". This is probably code for China and there is not necessarily anything wrong with that but, as I say, nothing to do with Oz.

I personally would never buy anything from them however, if they have what you're looking for, more power to you.

.

Too bad nobody in the whole land of Oz could make the Outback Knife. I mean, they had 25 years to do it. Had to have Norwegians get the Chinese to do it. Down Under does imply Australia. If somebody in Australia had done it, I would like it better for sure. But they didn't. They missed a chance to cash in on one of the iconic knives in popular culture. But then, the original wasn't made in Australia, either.

Nice review!
I've had one myself now for about a year. Very nice looking knife. I call mine "Veronica" after the Archie comics. She's very nice to look at, smooth lines and lots of class. But when she starts bitchin....Stand clear.

I too find the knife unbalanced, Blade heavy. Not a big deal because it's just a display knife I only ever wore at 1812 reenactmentments. I've replaced her with a more period looking knife, so I probably will never carry her again publicly.

I'm also waiting the arrival of another large Bowie. The "Outrider Bowie"

I'll do a review after the snow clears.

We must suffer from the same disorder. I have almost bought the Outrider Bowie a few times! Nice looking bowie.

Hi Horn Dog -

I too have an affliction for large Bowies for some unknown reason.

I'll add a picture of my JK Handmade Gamblers Bowie for your enjoyment. Stomper made this one for me in 01 steel with a coffin style maple burl handle with brass pins. It is a monster, but all I have done with it so far is carve the Thanksgiving turkey.

I also had Noah of Wasteland Leatherwork make one of his trademark Apocalyptic Leather sheaths for the big JK.

So as not to totally hi-jack your thread, I will add that if/when I get an outback, I will have it rockwell tested, as I have access to that service through the company I work for.

best regards -

That's a beauty, mqqn. Love coffin handled bowies. I have a few myself. I have drawers and boxes full of Bowies. It's just sick!

oh yes...Many a man has been seduced by the "Iron Mistress" . She's had me under her spell since I was about 12. Saw an old movie about Jim Bowie (Appropriately named "The Iron Mistress"). But how do you not love her sexy curves and sharp edges. (Woe Gettin all worked up just thinking about it) Forged during the Civil war, The original was present at the Alamo stand off. She has such a rich history.

The addicting part is...There's always another Bowie. I don't spend the time I used to with Veronica anymore, I picked up a Schrade Corby (Sandra) and now she has a place in my heart. I've also got that outrider Bowie in the mail. (Won't name her till she arrives). And I also have this Sweet looking lady (Dirty girl) In the forge as we speak.

Should be here end of the month. Drool
The truth about the Bowie is...She's as cold as steel, she'll take your heart and your money and you'll give it willingly.

Oh yes. I grew up watching Jim Bowie, too. Had to have an Iron Mistress.

We can blame Warner Bros TV for our affliction.

Hello Gorgeous!!

With all this knife porn... the admins are going to shut this thread down.

So quick post some more pix!!

I have to go now. But the mods would be justified after that sexy D Guard Bowie you showed. Pure steel porn there.

Great thread Horndog, thanks!!! I love them big old bowies!

Hi Guys
I have some info on this knife .... a friend of mine asked me to pick this knife up for him, which I did from a knife site on the web,we recieved the knife and yes it is one nice hand full and wall hanger ,he could not be more happier with it ,TILL... a week later he openned the box to see the black ebony was cracked on the handle, this just happen laying in storage.....well I contacted the knife dealer and outback knifes the manufacturer...first outback knifes got back to me telling me this has happen to a few of there knife and that I can fix it buy soaking it in oil ..ect..... what the funk...he just paid $200.00 for a week old knife and they want him to fix it...then I recieved a email from the dealer we bought it from telling us to send it back ,this had nothing to do with the manufacturer ,this was the dealers choose and they refunded the money no questions asked (Great dealer) ..the thing is my friend still wants one of these knife..hes a wood carver and knows about wood and said that the black ebony is very brittle and if the grain in not cut right this will happen again..so I have to talk to him later to see if he wants to try and get another one......I have to say even with the problem he had this is the nicest Bowie I ever seen.....Thanks for the post...Mike

I'll get my wife to take some pix of me with my uniform on and the rest of my kit.
Probably post them tomorrow.

I've been looking at The Outback knife for a short while now, I'm still undecided whether to get it or not yet, I've yet to find a review that shows it in practice other than what the manufacturer have.

I'm primarily after a decent long lasting knife for trekking/hunting that has a hint of sexy to it. The Outback appears to be that knife, but I never trust marketing.

What did you want to see? It cuts. It chops. It holds an edge. If you want a good looking outdoor knife, you might look at the Linder Bowies from Germany. I got this one for display. I have plenty of good outdoor knives.

Thanks mate I'll check that one out.

I've just heard the blade is great on The Outback but the handle isn't. Primarily wondering if it can take a hit without snapping around the tang?

The tang is pretty hefty, 8 mm. Large kukris with less tang take a beating pretty well. I chopped some pretty hard seasoned wood with mine, and it held up. I did not baton with it as it is a display knife and I did not want to scratch up the finish too much. For the real world I like my Busses and ESEE big bowies and a few others. But those may be too ugly for you. :D

haha looks like you've got a few knives there, I'm the same with swords, love collecting them for display. Knives I use for mostly bush work, and I've been going through the el cheapo's pretty quickly so decided on putting a bit more cash towards one. Your review did help me alot in getting a better idea for it.

I'll be checking out the ones you've suggested, The Outback does look a bit too pretty to smack up doesn't it? lol

The Browning Crowell/Barker Competition knife is a good value in a chopper. I use mine a lot. Last time I looked AG Russell had them.

Yeah, AG has them and they're on ebay too.

For me, $200 or so can get a damn nice knife from one of the custom makers on here, either in the maker's sale forum or in the individual's sale forum. JMHO.
