Steel blends are like women... people debate over them endlessly.. Kinda like gasoline with NEW SUPER IMPROVED etc etc. INFI steel (branded by Busse) is just a name not a performance guarantee :) The steel selected has to be matched to the expectations of the user, the size of the knife, real application etc. Its actually healthier to offer a knife in different steels for lets say tropical cutting vs desert bashing vs close in work vs opening tins etc etc. There is no one steel that does everything better. The spring steel HEST is as about as old school and useful as you can get for bush work. The HEST II is for a slightly different application where finer edge work, corrosion resistance and feel is needed.

Good question. As you know the goal of the fixed blad is to be massively abused, field sharpened and indestructible. We are going to make them in various steels and destroy them. Please weigh in with your opinions, suggestions. The entire knife (except for the blade will be Titanium Boron coated so the focus is on durability, edge retention and ability to withstand massive shock (I use mine as a chisel on rock for example)

Powder, non-ingot steels will shear when laterally stressed. Although ingot steels do not have perfect carbide distribution, they're much tougher.

H-1 is 100% rustproof and work-hardened. Since it's work-hardened, it is differentially tempered, and less brittle than through-hardened steels. It can be bent 90 degrees without breaking.

Good old 154 CM is also extremely tough; when done right. With 4% moly, it fends off chloride corrosion very well. Chlorides account for a great majority of steel corrosion. They're in blood, cellular fluids, salts(of course), etc.

As far as coatings, Crucible states: "Nitriding decreases the corrosion resistance of stainless steels, and is not generally recommended for this grade."

Since the HEAT is out, i might as well post couple of renders my self. 3 inch blade from point to pivot and 2.3 inch edge, 6.14inch/ 15.6cm overall. I made extra sure it feels nice in hand and put a lot of attention to detail when working on the knife. I like it a lot...but then again, i'm biased:)
- Does that mean the actual blade portion is around 2.5" from the handle?

Just to be clear......The HEAT is going into production. I just placed the order BUT we are not taking pre-orders, no one is ordering one. etc etc. When we see protos we will post them here.
:D ... I don't blame you. ;) :)

BUT, might I make a humble suggestion; before it get's out of hand. ??

Remove the "Pre-Order link" and page on the DPx site.

Because according to what is posted below, copied from the DPx site...
.....I "Pre-Ordered" a HEAT yesterday. ;)

The pre-order links on the new DPx Gear website do seem a little misleading at this point. I would suggest changing the link to say something that is in regards to information updates.

Such as: DPx Gear Product Development Mailing List

Then you could aggregate the contact information for mass email updates at different stages of product development. Mostly for those that don't frequent BladeForums.

Just an idea.

Where is the new countdown clock? I can't seem to find it.;)

wondering if the HEAT will be available with pink anodizing and pink G10. not that i want one for myself, but it could be a good gift for the wives and girlfriends.... so they can open your beverage without breaking a nail, y'know!

I love the look of the Heat but I'm afraid I won't carry it when I have the HEST/F to carry.

Someone convince me and give a compelling reason because I'm close

This little guy will virtually vanish in the pocket and for me will be a good carry for every occasion. GET IT! :D

Have not paid attention to the web site if it says "preorder" and will fix that. Its just a concept and the actual protos have been ordered. The blade thickness is 4mm (the HEST is 5mm)

Awesome info. I actually don't own any INFI, I was just giving the standard Bladeforums answer ;) I live in a dry climate, so good ol' 1095 has always been alright with me

Wow, RYP, you and Tomso are cranking out some great designs. These are some really exciting tools; I am psyched to see what you do with non-knives, multi-tools, packs, et c.
