Dual Survival

Just saw the first episode on Youtube. I like it, its ok wathing but nothing extraordinary. It dosent add anything that the other survival shows havent been through. And i felt like i had already seen the show after watching the clips on discoverys site.

I like Cody and his angle at survival...its different enough to be interesting and i like his down-to-earth attitude.

In the end i still prefer Les Strouds Survivorman, but im still going to watch Dual Survival, and hopefully pick up some knowledge from these 2 survival experts.

Honestly, I'm sure it's all staged. Cody's certified guru status is well-known. Dave undoubtedly knows about it.

Of course, walking around in the snow without shoes would piss me off a bit too, but everyone knows that's how Cody rolls.

I've talked to Dave on the phone before a few times and he and Cody are friends. If I remember right, Dave said they were like brothers (fighting but still having mutual respect).

Great show - Dave was made to look like a total judgemental asshat. I'm sure it was encouraged for the conflict angle. Cody only criticized Dave for the night trap checking thing which he felt was a real risk. Dave sat and bitched about just about everything Cody did, even when Cody made a great shelter that Dave came to appreciate it, he still bitched about it at first. Again, this was probably played up more than it actually went down and neither one of them really felt they were in trouble.

Okay - so why did Dave decide to ruin the paddle to make a spear when he was surrounded by a forest of sticks on which to make a spear???

All I know is that he is shorter in real life.... Ha!

Dave has a tonne of respect for Cody. The show plays him off as always bitching... but it was edited to portray that.

I liked it alot. Good show with 2 great guys. Being a show for entertainment, I'm sure the producers amp up the squabbling.

Has to be a producer decision. No way Dave does that in the real world... unless he was planning on whittling an oar in case they decided to row for another island. :)

Even before the days of every soldier having night vision, soldiers patrolled at night with little more than reflective "ranger eyes" on the back of our hats. It probably wasn't the smartest thing to do but in a small area like that with raging campfire as a beacon to lead one home, it isn't that much of a risk to a seasoned guy.

If I was Dave, I'd be just a little pissed at the Discovery Channel...at the very least, I'd want to punch the producer in the snotbox.
I don't know Mr. Canterbury, and I only know Cody Lundin from a couple of things. But, if what some of you people say is true -- then the Discovery Channel owes him an apology and an apology to its viewers for making him look like a gigantic douche.

I kept wanting to appreciate Mr. Canterbury's style of doing things, but I became kind of disgusted when it appeared all he wanted to do was insult Mr. Lundin and unleash his inner Grylli-Vanilli. I even laughed at the sharpened boat oar, and then almost lost my soda when Mr. Canterbury went to all the trouble to sharpen and fire-harden the pike end, only to whack the porcupine with the blade end. (even my mom, who doesn't have a clue about most things survival-related, said "Why'd he sharpen it if he was just gonna whack that porcupine? Wasn't there a forest of things to make a sharpened stick from?")

At the end I kept telling myself: "They're more than likely just editing it to seem like Mr. Canterbury is that way. Surely he has more sense than that and is more civil than to just insult a guy who clearly knows his doody."

They made Dave Canterbury seem like a clueless, ungrateful, insulting cave man. And if he isn't that way in real life, then he has every right to want to use somebody's butt for a chew rag.
But by the same token, they seemed to highlight and underscore Cody Lundin's "work with Ma' Nature" attitude (what Dave Canterbury called his "Bush Hippie Logic"). So I'm thinking it was indeed a goal to make Mr. Canterbury seem like a clueless brute, and Mr. Lundin an elightened spirit of the woods. Probably out of tinsel-town's bias toward the whole "Man Made Everything that is wrong with the Earth" vibe.

I still enjoyed the program, it's 10 times better than the best episode of "America's Next Top Singing and Dancing Idiot" any old day of the week.

Dave came of like Steve Austin of the woods. Uneducated and ignorant.

Cody came off like a guy that is pragmatic and has science to back his stuff up even though is sounds very hippie new agey at first.

I will probably watch just for the scenery but I definitely could do without that crappy editing to make them look like an old married couple. Maybe the Discovery Channel was shooting for "The Odd Couple in the Woods".

Editors stink and I don't like them. With a survival based show I think the soap opera component is totally unnecessary and takes away from the credibility of the show and Discovery. The no nonsense approach of Stroud would be a welcome injection into this show...Maybe Les and Cody would have been less WWE.

After watching the whole thing, straight through... I think it was well balanced. They played off Dave's military/harsh approach and Cody's natureboy philosophy equally showing advantages and disadvantages. They both contributed throughout the show and the contrast made for good viewing.

You can't compare it to Les or Bear.... it is a different show. I don't think they want to compete.

I agree 100% ! the survival odd couple :D both work well within their abilities and methods & yes they play off of each other strengths and weakness, Reminds me of Brothers trying to get the best of each other

A survival show in itself is basically kind of boring and the bottom line for TV producers and execs is attracting as many viewers as possible. I don't necessarily agree with the "odd couple" spin they put on it but this is the age of "reality TV" so they must feel they need to spice it up a bit with some side drama to make it more appealing to the general population.

I say that each man is worth his salt. I will not have it said that I turned away knowlege of any kind. I'm sure that each of them will walk away with more than they came with. ill bet I'm not alone on this either

Also don't forget that your only seeing 45-50 minutes of there 3 or 4 days out there. They likely had shit tons of conversations about things that were left on the editing room floor.

Watched it, , was entertained by it and will watch it again.

+1, after re-watching it in a not-so-tired state. Kinda liked it.

Will watch it again. But I again reserve judgement to see where they go with the editing of Dave Canterbury.

I do agree that Dave got the short end of the stick on editing, and also have little doubt that it can be attributed to the editors' bias toward mother earth, bad Americans have screwed up every natural thing they've touched, and the military and everything about it sucks. Doesn't bias me against Dave Canterbury; heavily biases me against just jumping totally on board with the show.

I knew Cody from around 10 years ago when I worked at REI. He was truly a huge guy and super soft spoken. We chatted for almost an hour the first time he came in. First time I met him he was barefoot in Phoenix when the ground was pretty hot. He was buying wool socks for the first time to get geared up for winter. I like Dave as well from videos but Cody just seems to put a lot of working with nature bEhind things he does which I really like.
