EDC XIII Which knife or knives are you carrying today?

It's been awful hot and muggy these past few days for our NE coastal area and it's been hard to feel motivated to do too much. We took road trips the last couple days up Cape to run errands and enjoy the AC in J's truck and my Charger as we haven't set up our home units so far. We certainly do have the dehumidifiers running in the basement and garage shop next door, though. It's supposed to cool off some tonight and over the next few days, so we'll stick with the fans and hope we can hold off on the expense of running the AC until next month.

Anyway, it was a good day to carry one of my non-work knives that hasn't been pocketed for a while.

Our local black bears would push our 10-12 foot (I can't remember, we tore it down 2 years ago after repairing it every year) wire (not chicken wire, but the thicker stuff that the gaps get smaller as they go down to keep out the smaller animals) fence that used cemented 6x6's every 10 feet or so feet every year. We've had a family of big black bears who have a den area in the next property down basically my whole life. They'd be chill and cool all year round, until the plums on our tree would get just to the perfect ripeness and then one would just push one of the posts down and hop in. They'd also get into our double tied down and rubber bungied trash now and again (didn't matter if it was metal or plastic). Other than that though they've always been real cool and never bothered us at all. Never bothered any of our dogs throughout the years either. In fact, even though we had to remove the fence 2 years ago because it was too much work for my dad (who's getting older) to repair every year, we still take it upon ourselves to try to protect the bear family because newer city slicker type of people have moved in around their place who think that black bears are scary. I helped my dad pull out those posts last year and they were underground and in cement for about 3 feet, that was some work removing them!

I'd come home for the day and the big mamma or pappa would be just waltzing down our long gravel driveway. Those bears are good people, I hope they're ok still.

That said, I understand having an area of the property that they can't get into for sure. Looks like a very nice fence.
It sounds like a PITA but any food scraps they might smell we package and freeze then put it in the trash the morning of pick up . Keeps the bears out of the trash really well.

Ha Ha the first year we lived here I was sitting on the couch and heard kabangabanga in the drive way . SWMBO said : what's going on out there ?
I said : bear trying to get into the can (that was when we used a steel can ; now we have the "easy open" plastic bin) .
SWMBO said : there is broken glass in there . DON'T LET HIM GET INTO THE CAN !
Ha ha ha . . . I just stood there and looked at her like : and how EXACTLY do you expect me to stop a bear from getting into a trash can that is now directly under his paws ? ? ? ? ?

Then I had an inspiration ( probably one of the Ute spirits in this area " spoke to me " ) : Since I was on the second story , above our garage , I felt pretty inaccessible / pretty sure he wasn't going to turn and just eat me instead . . .
I opened the window and said : There is broken glass in there ! THAT'S NOT GOOD FOR BEARS ! .

He just looked up at me with an expression like : Thanks mate ; I'm off then .
Took his front paws off the top of the can and immediately sauntered off down the street .
😊
