Exotac nanoSTRIKER XL

Well, I spoke with Exotac today about my broken rod in my nanoStriker. They returned my email promptly and are going to replace the whole nano at not extra charge. I asks if I could get the XL if I were to pay the difference and they were happy to oblige.
Great service so far!!!!

You guys suck. I ordered the XL earlier today and it is already shipped out and on its way. Looking forward to the XL! I was happy to see the larger rod because the one I have now wore down quick!

In the course of the last two years I've gone through four or five rods and have only had one break, and it broke soon after putting it in and it seemed like it may have been a defect but I had several extra rods on hand so I didn't worry about it. That said I am very glad for the larger diameter rod, I am by no means an ultra-lighter. How did yours break? Did you contact Exotac?

I just figured it was a weak rod. it was right at the threads basically and there was still enough sticking out that I had no problem gripping it with pliers and pulling the broken piece out. I just threaded in one of the replacement rods. I did keep the broken one so I may contact them and see about a replacement rod or something. I love mine and edc it on my izula sheath. I broke it just practicing fire making on the porch. nothing serious at all.

here is a picture of it broken. it started the fire still

I'm on a waiting list with a local business. Thanks a lot, mistwalker! :grumpy:

I'm for thinking the 1/4" rod is going to be a better option for some of you heavy handed folks :p

:D

You have a local store that carries their stuff? Cool, I wish one here did.

It may have been my fault but I don't remember being to heavy handed with it. either way it's all good and I think I'll probably give the 1/4 a go :) we don't all have your finesse sir, you soft handed stallion :)

lmao :D I wrote Rob at Exotac about the broken rods and he said there had been a few and that they recently made a change and added 0.25 mm to the diameter of the rod on the original nanos and that it was a subtle change but strengthened the rods a significant amount. I'd write them and talk to them about yours though and what happened. Personally I'm loving the 1/4" rod on the XL and reeally loving the new striker and how well it works without using the lanyard.

Hey no problem bro, let me know what you think if you get the XL. I'm loving mine and seeing some less brightly colored ones in the near future :)

I received my XL nano striker today. In my opinion it's a huge improvement over the regular nano striker. The only downside is it's slightly larger but it's still so dang small that it totally cancels out that negative.

When I first learned they were coming the term XL conjured images of a nano at least 50% larger. It was a pleasant surprise to find the only difference in length was the added length of the striker, and that it was small enough still not to be a problem on a key ring.

You are adding to their business. I have one on the way as well. Glad we have you to try things out and give us a heads up. Thanks

Thanks, I've always been into checking out new fire starting tools. With their level of quality and fit and finish, and their innovative designs I'd like to see Exotac stick around a while. With the number of pieces I own myself, the nanos I've bought to give as gifts and the matchcaps I've sent straight from the website as gifts I've been adding to their business for two years now.

Great vid and review mistwalker. I'll be getting some Exotac goodies after Christmas.

Thanks Mike, I think the new nano XL is awesome. The larger striker is easier to use and the larger rod should be more durable and and last a bit longer. I like a lot of the new stuff they're coming out with now. I like the poly striker too and I can't wait to get one of the new Match Cap XLs for a survival capsule. May end up with a few of those in different kits.

I have one of these too. I've decided to go through some of my footage from BLADE 2011 and make some videos. Here is the first one in a series.

PS - I've also written about this thing for SWAT. Should be coming out in a few months.

Cool video. I talked to Rob shortly after I got my first nano and his thoughts on portability were spot on with my thoughts and wants in an edc fire starter. I love that the nano is so small and highly portable, self contained, and weather/sweat sealed. I have carried the Ti nano on my key ring for about a year and a half and never leave home without it. I got the orange XL for a neck knife kit I put together and I love the new striker and larger rod so I am thinking a gunmetal XL may replace the Ti at least in the winter months. I'm really hoping they come out with a Ti XL at some point because I have a "thing" for Ti.

Oh, BTW I have put a couple of MatchCaps through some pretty serious environmental testing too, I'm really looking forward to getting a new MCXL soon for the larger size to make a small "survival" capsule from.

I like the orange. I'm considering buying one and taking it to the Amazon. Orange is my preferred color for high pressure outdoor situations. I almost always set something down and then have a hard time finding it. I'm not a match guy but the Matchcap is really well made. If someone is a match guy, the matchcap is worth checking out.

The orange is definitely high viz and that's why I wanted it for the neck knife kit, for the same reason you want it. I like the Ti and gunmetal for the key ring because it doesn't really draw attention. The new match cap design is a good bit larger in diameter. I'll be putting a few matches in it of course but it also has room for other small items in a small kit like fish hooks, line, even a small container of PJCBs, an exacto blade, etc. and unlike an altoids tin it is water proof :)
