This is the first I've ever heard of such a thing!

They are pretty common down here in the south. You just roll out the pie crust in a circle about the size of a saucer, spoon in whatever filling you like...apple, cherry, peach, blueberry, strawberry is a bit on the rare side, what ever. fold over the crust, pinch it closed, Then just fry it in a skillet.
 
All of this fried pie talk is making me miss Hubig's so much. They were the local fried pie vendor, and they, sadly, burned down about 5 years ago and never returned.
