You are correct. Mesquite is excellent for grilling as it burns hot and imparts lots of flavor. But smoking with it can be absolutely overwhelming. Obviously, if it's all you've got then use it as best you can. But the best BBQ places down here use post oak, live oak, or pecan; plenty of flavor, but much more mild than mesquite.
My ol lady is actually allergic to mesquite smoke. Her stomach cramps up badly when she eats anything smoked with it.

I’ve tested this several times without telling her, sometimes telling her it was some other type of wood, and once by accident (thought I had grabbed hickory but it was mesquite).

Every single time she was cramping up in pain. I don’t question it anymore, I just don’t smoke stuff for her with it. Me and my son love mesquite smoke on some meat! Just don’t go overboard - it’s powerful.

For all you Gen-X guys who remember the unobtainium "First Blood" (*Lile) and "Commando" (*Crain) days, and remember the absolute CRAP that was marketed as "survival knives" in those days, y'all really need to beat on some robust stuff...

And with that, I'm going into hiding...before the "Randall Made" collectors dox my ass, and call for my absolute ruination for beating on one of their precious knives.
