FK2 Prototype

I'd like to see a direct comparison of the original fk. Specifically the handles of both. The original just didn't do it for me, hoping this one works out. It looks like it has some influence from the hdfk, which would be sweet.

The handle is very close to the same in profile, but wider in width, however the developed circumference (the size that you feel in your hand) is about the same as the original. This is because the shape is less planer and more rounded. I did this so the knife could be turned in the hand to offer more grip options for field craft work where the original kind of locked in at one angle. I've also tweaked the ass end of it to better accommodate a three finger grip. That plus the relatively long handle gives you some length for a little bit of light chopping (for such a small knife). My goal here is a versatile hand tool. This is why I wanted the prototypes to go to end users with experience with the original. The whole crew here has given it their .02 but I want some user feedback before we go into production.

With the reservation that I’ve bit yet put it to hard use, the handles feel like night and day to me. The FK1 felt a little “blocky”, but the FK2 fills the hand much nicer. There’s a bit of a palm swell, especially down to the fingers (but maybe that’s not the palm, anyway) that I’m not used to yet, but more on that later.

Nathan says it’s the same circumference but I’d never have guessed that.

So is this mostly a lighter version of the HDFK or something completely different? I will probably need one either way

I don’t think it’s a “lighter version of the HDFK”, so from that point of view it’s completely different. But with that said I think I could use the FK2 for most things I use the HDFK for, but in a smaller package. With the exception of chopping (which the HDFK do, but not as well as a dedicated chopper) and splitting larger logs. But for starting a fire the FK2 will do just fine.

But at the same time it’s also a “larger EDC”, meaning much more nimble as a belt knife and for everyday chores, but not quite as purpose built as the EDC.

Still just opinion after fondling it and comparing it to my experience with the other models.

I’ve been travellig so much before Christmas I just got this BMF in hand, and I can already say I think we’ll become BFF.

I’ll use this thread to post comparisons and thoughts as I use it over the holidays. Feel free to chime in if you like Gus!

If you have any non-destructive, PG13 requests, let me know and I’ll try to accommodate. ;)

Thanks Nils. Congrats on scoring that beautiful BMF! I was out of town for a few days, and I just got my BMF yesterday. I love it too! I’ll post some comp pics with the original FK and the HDFK.

First of all, I would like to thank my guardian angel for making my Christmas wish come true.

Seriously, thanks again to Jarrett (Panthera Tigris) for proxying this grail for me.:)

I agree with Nils. I think the handle feels better on the FK2. It feels like a scaled down HDFK. I’m really digging the burlap scales too.
As seen in the pic below, it has a higher grind, and more belly. I haven’t measured them, but they look like they’re the same thickness.

Both of these responses help. I certainly like the fact that the overall shape is a bit rounder. The length and diameter was never an issue on the original, but now that it's been brought up, the blocky shape does seem like the appropriate gripe I had with it. I have a difficult time finding the words that describe what I'm feeling, so I can be difficult to please regarding what I like or don't like when it comes to ergonomics. But I will say I like when I can loosen my grip on a knife and easily roll or manipulate it into the position I want. I find it to be very easy with the hdfk and especially the edc. These characteristics would be welcomed in the fk 2.0. In my opinion of course.

That side to side spine shot just locked it in for me bud!
I was kinda worried that the FK2 wouldn’t have the same reverse coke bottle shape that the original FK has.

Thank you for the great comparison shots!
