GEC #89 Fruit Knife...well, that was a surprise!

Looking good! 😎 Mine seems to be taking a slow train from Oklahoma, but it should be here in a couple days.
Thanks Barrett, it's a nice little knife, I've never had an 89 frame before. Man, I blinked and mine was here from Barry in no time. The mail today however is a very strange experience to say the least🤪

I haven’t had one before, either. I’m looking forward to checking it out (and comparing the Lemon Brite to my favorite acrylic, Nifebrite).

I received my GITD 89 yesterday in the mail. There is nothing wrong with the knife. It is beautiful, the fit and finish is normal GEC quality. The action is a bit weak, but it is a small skinny little knife, so I figure that makes sense. It didn't blow me away, and I almost immediately decided to try and trade it. I came to my senses shortly after and removed my trade post. I think I need to give it some time. I have a feeling I would regret getting rid of it. I just need to get used to the size and weight of it, and stop trying to compare it to my normal users (74, 47, 35, 15). It definitely fits a niche, but I just need to bond with it first.

Probably smart to kick it around a bit. Stainless, slim, first time offered in single blade... Niche like you said. I wish the blade was a tiny bit thicker. I know it's a fruit knife, I just don't want to bend it on an apple seed 😳

This showed up in the mail a few days early. I’m a little tired after work to properly inspect it but my first impressions are favorable. The blade isn’t the sharpest that I’ve gotten from GEC but than can easily be remedied. Overall it’s a nice slim knife.

I never had the 89 patter before this knife but I must say, I enjoy using it to cut up fruit for my little guy. The glow in the dark isn’t for me but I like the pattern on the acrylic I received.

Well I managed to get one of these off a dealer for only 30 bucks above the minimum so I guess I got lucky.

Since it was stainless I was hoping for the Cyclops tang stamp but not this time.
It is a cool little knife.

I will probably use this more than my 89 whittler or the riverboat gambler though.

The apples and oranges acrylic is very cool.
I think sunlight brings it out very nicely and wish GEC would do at least one acrylic on every run.

I got my store model in today's mail. Great little knife and I love my first acrylic!

I'm not sure (as usual) what caused this to be designated an "s" model, but it certainly has no issues with a proud tip. I believe the blade may actually sit too deep in the well, but only a sharpening and time will tell. Very happy here!😁

Geesh, sharpening this #89 from butter knife status to acceptable was an exercise in patience! Fairly certain is has at least some blade rap bit no worries here. Having a red beard and all, i should have no trouble closing this one gingerly.😉

I know that early on some of the retailers reported these to have 420HC stainless, but have GEC ever said what the alloy is?? If not . . . come on, GEC, fess up!

My Lemonbrite and Chestnut should be in my mailbox right now, come ooooooon, COB!!

I like it. It’s a quirky knife, but I like it.

Ah, drat. Both my A/O acrylic and Chestnut are perfect, but my LemonBrite has a slightly proud tip. 😕

This is a pattern that held little interest to me but I’m happy that I didn’t let it pass me by. Mine in Chestnut arrived today - it is slim, elegant, and feels great in hand despite being so slender. That long, thin blade is going to be quite useful, I think.

That said, it is not GEC’s best effort. The back spring is slightly proud when open and slightly recessed when closed, the tip is a hair proud, it’s a bit off-center, and the blade is one of the dullest I’ve ever received from GEC. None of these are deal breakers for me though and I’m rather happy to have an 89 and some GEC stainless in the collection.
