Gerber Sportsman Multi-Plier for $5

Yes, it's happened on my smaller Gerber 400 series Compact Multi-Plier too.

Here's a VERY, very simple solution -

once I figured out it was over-squeezing the pliers handles - like trying to crimp something -
what happens is the handles distort causing the the pliers to lock up.

So that VERY simple solution was to simply pull the handles apart (ie: the opposite direction) until the head frees up again :D

One can actually alternate between squeeze and pull apart to get the pliers to feel just right.........

Told you it was VERY simple -

I've tried everything, I've had them for 5 years. I've taken them apart a hundred times. They will seize no matter what I do, it's no big deal as I usually don't carry them, in fact I may just trash them one of these years.

Yep - that's the flaw in the Gerber design - that they will seize up if the handles are squeezed too hard.

One can unseize them by very simply pulling the handles apart -
but that will not prevent them from seizing again if squeezed too hard.

I would guess over time this seize and unseize will weaken the handle steel.

For hard squeezing I would choose some other multiTool over the Gerbers....
or some real regular pliers.......

I'd rather shoot myself in the head than travel anywhere near Elizabeth! I found one on Rt. 23 in Wantage.
 
I went to the Wal-Mart in Mountain View, California. There are no Gerber Sportsman Multi-Plier for $5. Is the clearance only at select stores?
 
rogue_spear, some Wal*Marts still have a few, some have probably sold out. The Gerber Sportsman Multi-Plier started showing up in my local Wal*Mart stores during the Christmas season, priced at $25, and the price started going down just after, starting at $21, then $15, then $11, and then down to $5...at the $5 price, they almost start walking out the door under their own power. :)

I went to my local Wal Mart on my lunch hour the first day I read this post. They had marked them down that morning and all 26 that they had left were already gone. They said people were buying the 2-5 at a time.
