Keep it Alive in 2025

GEC is, or was seen, as a safe bet to move a large number of knives as it should attract people desperate to get a GEC and not just forum participants. Though some of the 2024 BF knives may still be available, they will sell in the end.
There is also the prestige, if you want, to have a GEC forum knife.

If the forum knife was a 200-300 USD/EUR Case or Buck then it may not sell enough, to justify a (minimum) order. Same with other brands, from the US, EU or the UK.

Ideally, it should be a unique design mix, desirable and value for money.

I guess I'm the odd man out on this idea, because I always thought the BF Knife was supposed to be about having something to treasure and use, and when using or even just carrying, thinking about the good times and good friends that being a member here has brought about for the bearer. "Ideally", sure makes it sound like you're saying "We need to make sure the BF knife is desirable for collectors and flippers so that secondary market value will make it worth the purchase." If that wasn't your intent, I apologe for the misunderstanding.

That's not what the BF knife was ever supposed to be about, and I for one will be looking forward to us getting off the GEC train.

Yep, I said what I said.

I would love to see if someone could approach Case about a forum knife. I personally would be very sentimentally interested in a Case forum knife (especially a scout, sailor, or whaler pattern). I was very touched some years back when Case reached out to me to donate a number of knives to my annual memorial giveaway. It was a moment that really drove home that as much as Case can seem like a big faceless company, it is made up of people. And my limited experiences with those people have been entirely positive. They also make my all time favorite version of the classic scout pattern knife, so an opportunity to get a Blade Forums Scout Knife from Case would have me over the moon. I would definitely have to spend way too much money buying multiples.

I recall it being said that our forum knife would not meet the criteria for a Case SFO - too few pieces to warrant their effort, if memory serves. Unless, of course, something has changed since then.

I suspect Buck would be disinclined to do another forum knife for us. The last one seemed to spark a fair amount of griping. And they have not been doing special runs the way they used to for some years now. I really miss the SK Blades knives they used to run. 100% of my retail Buck knife purchases this century were through SK Blades, and I really really like those knives. I personally thought the 2018 Buck that we got through SK Blades was one of my all time favorite forum knives, but I know many disagreed. So as much as I would love a Blade Forums Buck 105, I think that the chances are between slim and none.

I thought the Buck forum knife was one of the more pleasant forum efforts. Not only was SK a great sport but I don't remember a lot of bickering going on, mostly just fun banter. Plus, we ended up with a knife you can't really get from Buck otherwise. I'd be delighted to have Buck be on the table for consideration again.

I'm actually kind of glad that the polling-for-features era seems to be over. There was always somebody who had to critique every comment made during the process.

I do not need to see the polling come back. It brought out the worst in us, myself included, and it was a good learning experience. Whenever I though I was speaking voice to reason, I was simply adding more fuel to the flames. Folks these days don't have the same patience that we had 10+ years ago and it is far easier to get our backs up at perceived slights. No, let's keep it simple and straightforward.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. The BF knife is, in my opinion, a keepsake, not a collector's investment opportunity.

im sure at some point the conversation will get to, "it's what it is, take it or leave it."
So true!! 😞

It used to be my favorite part of the forum knife process, and then it became my least favorite. There were a few times that it came very close to making me walk away from the porch altogether.

I would like to see a 35 option like cattle or Churchill, maybe a 78 american single clip ,as for opinel I would bye it as a bladeforums knife, but i have never been tempted to buy one otherwise, buck ranger with bone or ebony handles. But by the end of this thread will be plenty of options,i enjoyed the last bf knife except price,I would of liked darker covers but have no Qualms with the light dye job.

It would be nice for the forum knife to be something that is hard to get from a dealer drop. The recent 77's went really quick and are already commanding ridiculous secondary prices. Something like a 15, 77, 78, or 86 single blade barlow with marrow bone or nice jigged bone covers would be a treat.

I think Bunny Knife meets your description well. It is a simple working knife, even being a recreation of a classic old pattern, and it doesn't seem to attract too much flipper attention this days (at least I don't think so). Also, Charlie's input, brilliant as usual. For me that makes a perfect forum knife, and that's why I admire mine. Last two BF knives were great, themselves, but they lack a bit of that community feeling to them.

If we go GEC, I'd rather see a simple jack (14, 15) or pen (09, 35, 53/54), one or two blades, Tidioute trim - no frills, classic handle material from GEC's regulars (cocobolo, ebony, bocote, or simple smooth white bone), BF tang stamp, simple bar shield (or maybe stamped shield, like another forum's, it looks good too), and a community spirit. In other words, make it special for us but not too much for the flippers.

Charlie's input might also help. 🙂

I think an 86 might be out of the question since they have done them so recently. In that same vein since they are running the 77s now it would be hard to believe they'd go back to that pattern just for the forum knife. I think a 15 would be a cool option, though I'd really love to see a 53/54. Has there been an equal end forum knife yet?

Those 53/54's are big knives. That's the reason I'm going to sell my Forum knife.... it's just a bigger knife than I want to carry... But.. I could certainly be in the minority about that.

and we have had 2 86 bladeforum knives. love em, as every derivative the 15 is practically welcomed in my collection

I liked the pattern of the 2024 trad knife, but wasn’t crazy about the jigging and dye job. I bought one anyway because the point is to support the forum, which I enjoy. I will probably buy one again if given the opportunity this year. I’d love to see another GEC, a Buck would be cool too.

If it’s a Rosecraft or something else from the PRC ill sit it out, but generally I am grateful to be afforded the opportunity (and for the work that goes into it), and happy to support the forum.
