Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

We can sit back and get enthralled. I'm particularly eager to see the smaller of the two.

This is the Birth of the Cool:cool:

Well said Will.

Watching a favorite pattern of mine come to life will be awesome.

Had a chance to make dust and chips as Brad puts it, :) . working on the 3 5/8 version first as I needed to make up a pattern for this size. In my oven now.

Full steam ahead! Many thanks for keeping us up-to-date on the WIP, wonderful stuff.

Regards, Will

I love these wip pictures, so cool seeing all the pieces separately before it all comes together. Gives me a whole other level of appreciation for what it takes to make such a quality finished product. Someone is going to be incredibly lucky to getting one of these.

Had a chance to make progress on the 3 5/8 version. I have the springs fit up, which is always a nail biter on these lockback whitters. The springs work both the lockbar and one of the secondary blades. I think I did a quick count and came up with about 18 or 20 distinct fitting points in this knife. I still have the final fitting of tangs to springs, and lockbar to master blade, then onto the initial grinding of the bevels. You may notice the nail pull in the master is larger than it should be. Being that I cut my nail pulls in before heat treat I have to account for more material being taken off when grinding the blade bevels.

Wow, that is a lot of fitting points! Very impressive, really highlights how much works must go into getting these complicated knives just right.

Masterful, Ken. I can only imagine how meticulous one must be to get this one right. What a pleasure to get to see the stages of this build! Thank you.

Thanks for letting us sneak a peek, Ken. Incredible work - this will be an outstanding knife!
Again :)

I like the choice of blades on that one, Ken. That's going to be a nice knife! I'm keeping my eye on this thread.

Sorry for the lack of update on the first of the whittlers. I do have a quick picture with more to come after I put the finishing touches on it. I still have some final finishing, along with sharpening.

That is incredible, Ken. That tortoise shell is the icing on the cake.
