Let's see your GEC #23's, 73's, 83's and 72's

Brett, I was curious about the patina as well. This is after a night lime cutting, I know the patina with evolve the more I use it but when I woke up this morning and saw this I had to take a pic. I usually degloss all of my Northfields if I am going to keep/use them, I like a satin finish. I decided with this one I was going to let the patina build on the polished blade. Very interesting results, the pic is reflected light, it is duller in appearance in ambient light.

Jeff, looks great buddy. I look forward to seeing how it changes it time. Certainly makes me want to play a little Hendrix or Pink Floyd. :D.

Jeff, I hate you!
Just kidding, but serisouly man I went on a hunt for a dark #72 violet like yours and came up short. Everything dark seems to be gone. I'm still not sure if I'll get one. I'm still looking around. The patina on yours, the lanyard stud, the everything! Awesome pics and great knife!

Great shots and a even more gorgeous knife. Well done.

I don't own a 73 or 72 yet. Can someone tell me why they prefer the 73 over the 72? They seem very similar in pattern.

The #73 utilizes a drop point that is sometimes paired with a spey blade instead of a clip, spear, or wharncliffe which is optional on the #72. All my experience with the #72 is based off of the lockback variation. The #72 lockback has no half stop and an extremely smooth open and close, where the #73 has half stops and can be a bear trap at times. I like a firm pull and half stops so no complaint from me. The #73 is 3 3/4" closed and the #72 is 3 7/8" closed. Not much a difference there. I like a locking blade for outdoor use and the #73 comes with a liner lock and that is very useful and unobtrusive. Ultimately, I've used the #73 the most and have a fondness for the pattern after years of successful hunts and campfires.

I like to have a Lock Back for some jobs , but overall I prefer not having to mess with a Lock at all. Most times the job for me is just a little cut. For the feel , I can not tell a difference . My normal carry is below .

Well that answers my question and I am going to try the 72 first because I am tired of nail breaker bear trap pulls. Plus it would be nice to have a GEC without the half stop just to try something different for me.

Thanks for answering like that! It really helped me.

I'm torn between a 72 and 73. I've been leaning towards a 73 because I have concerns about blade play in the 72's. it's a huge deal to me. How's the lock up on the newer 72's?

To be honest it drives me nuts as well. I love the pattern though and who doesn't love a lockback?
I have one back at GEC getting the blade play taken out of it and I have one at home that locks up super nice. Any knife that gets used and torqued around is going to get play, but I'm hopeful the ones I have stay tight.

Honestly, I would got for it. It's my number one pet peeve and I love the knives.

This thread is evil, (johnny twoshoes and kba) after seeing all the 73 's I had to get one, so this just landed.
Its built like a tank, and the cocobolo is beautiful, chatoyance like a jack'o'lantern!
