Let's see your Scout/Camp knives

"Probably" kick yourself?
More like "will", isn't it? :)

And wouldn't building an extension to the house be a better option than "thinning the herd"?
I've known fishing lure collectors to add on to the house to make more room for their collections.

Justin, I posted a picture of an "unknown to me" knife that I now realize looks a lot like the knife in the upper left corner of your collection, except that my knife (posted earlier today and should appear close to this reply) does not have a thumb stud on the can opener. What knife is that one in your picture? Thanks.

I've been told it's a Camillus, an Ulster and a Kingston. I can't say for sure.

IMG_1763.JPG After Charlie showed us that beautiful collection I was apprehensive about showing my meager collection at this point. I've took a snap shots of Charlie's so that I can have them for posterity. I know it will take me some time but I hope to have some jewels like that.

Nice collection, Lostball! You have some great examples of the breed!
It took me a while to get comfortable buying old knives, and like most, I have made some mistakes, some costing a bit of money. My advice is to go slow like you are doing, and read a lot before you dive into antiques.

Way back in 2000 we did a "Special" magazine on the Y2K that was coming, and asked a lot of people if they had canned food on hand. Almost everyone did, but was surprising was that so few had mechanical can openers, a Swiss Army knife or a Scout knife. I would ask if they had a can opener, yes, right here on the counter. Is it electric, Yes. Point out that if the Y2k was as some forecasted there would be no electricity, so how would they open the cans? Pause and silence followed. Besides three mechanical can openers, one by "EZ-DUZ-IT" reportedly the last USA can opener maker, P38's, B52's, a bunch of SAK's, Western and Camillus Scout knives, Demo knife, Mercator combination knife, a French "Scof" folder, and several mess kit combination eating utensils, my only problem is which can opener to choose to open the cans. I do wonder how many people who were in the path in Texas and now in Florida of the hurricanes had a can opener/scout knife available? John, PS That canned chicken looks interesting.

Well ... I know my family in Homestead, FL. has two (or is it three?) of the Marbles rendition of the old all stainless Camillus "Demo" knives, two Ulster 4 blade Boy Scout knives, and a SAK Recruit, to open canned goods with. :)
They might even have a regular manual can opener, although as you know, those rarely work as well as the opener on one of these knives.
Come to think of it, I don't think we have an electric can opener. :)
Now, cooking or heating what's in the cans might be a tiny bit more difficult, since the stove is electric :(
I think all our camp stoves are in Idaho. :(
(I loathe electric stoves.)

Thank you Charlie for the kind words and the advice. Patients has never been one of my virtues. Thanks to you and several others here I have learned a great deal in a short period of time. I am glad to hear that you are going to have that collection for all of us to view for a long time now. Thank you for all your contributions here at BF

I will be sure to post those scouts in detail, Lostball, and thanks for the nice comments!

Back from page 8!!!! (koff, koff - dusty!! koff, koff - ahem - - -)
So, in my search to replace some Scouts lost in the mail a while ago, I came across some special knives!
Junior scout and camp knives are as intriguing to me as the giant "Texas - sized" behemoths!
These are 3 5/16" and 3 7/16" knives. I think less that 3 1/2" is the cutoff, and these are nicely compact, and present pocket-able utility knives.

Those are great. Who is the maker on the one with the acorn shield, is that a Remington stamp?

Charlie! again...two wonderful examples, I realised a while ago I didnt put my Scouts in here when I posted them in the Old Knives section, it's hard to follow up on such exquisite examples that you have kindly shared, but when I look at some of my Scouts, I am amazed how such great Knives they are- and in the condition that some of them are in - I am real proud of them- I must get busy here this weekend!

Yes, Last Rodeo, it's a Remington. They often put an acorn shield on any knife that had a punch!

I have been waiting patiently for your Scouts to show up, Duncan!! You have some great ones!!!
Hope to see 'em soon!!

Thank you Charlie, I am somewhat embarrassed showing these after you showing your stunning Knives- but this is the good thing- because I look at that as the pinnacle of a collection when you get a gathering of Knives in a certain model etc- yet...I look at my Knives- and although some show more wear that others- there are some absolutely stunning- and hard to get Scouts in there - AND in this this thread- congrats to all in showing your beautiful knives here.
After the Rendezvous I have committed to trying to buy the more pristine Scout- or HJ's for my collection- gone now are the days of buying just anything- then onto buy pretty good etc... but the exceptions continually pop up lol.

Theres a lot of work involved in re-posting etc, so I am copying from my posts in the OLD KNIFE Thread - and placing the Scouts here...
During the GEC and Queen Knife shows - I had the pleasure of attending with my friends- continually bumping into Dave - looking and listening to the deals going down- raising my head at different times and seeing John or Paul, Dave etc head down or in depth conversation- man that was great.
I took home some nice examples of Scouts- and to add Paul had some nice examples he had picked up and gifted me these as well- as it was a hefty package of Scouts that came home with me.
Robeson - amazing Bone, Shield- I cant believe how nice these Knives are..

Mr Paul Hilborn Gifted me this Miller Bros! Paul almost seemed embarrased by the wear on the Main Blade- the knife has been used! Paul this knife is a gorgeous Knife and Im thinking it would be a VERY lucky day if I was to ever lay my hands on such a knife in any tidier condition - what a sweetheart of a Knife....Thank you my friend....

One look at the Bone and we all say yep- N.Y Hammer Brand - I showed Bill this Knife at the GEC Rendezvous because of the simply outstanding Punch- hoping that a seed may be planted - Bill was mesmerized by the Build quality and the work that would go into such a Knife and Punch! This Knife is an outstanding Knife!
