They can protect your knife from other things in your pocket, keep your knife upright in your pocket, make your knife easier to retrieve in some cases, and they organize the contents of your pocket.

For me there's one glaring issue that has made me very particular in this area.
They're usually drawn with the knife and you've gotta do something with it while you're using your knife, the obvious solution is something that stays while the knife comes out.

For me the best solution has proven to be a pocket organizer, it stays while my knife comes out and is not in the way of other items because it contains them.
My knife is always in a specific spot and easy to fish out of my pocket like normal, the only shortcoming is you can't just blindly drop it back in like you could if carrying it loose.

Heres a couple things I made and used previously that did not prove to be perfect solutions

I can see a pocket organizer in my future. I don’t need to protect my knife but rattling around in my pocket with my flashlight, chapstick and pliers makes a jumbled mess to dig through. The trouble might be finding one that fits things just right.

I probably do not carry as many different tools in my pockets as many of you do . I do carry many of mine in Slips because of 2 reasons . I carry all of my Stag with Brass Liners and Pins in a Slip to reduce the possibility of that very ugly green colored Verdigris . I will carry the knives that I do not want damaged in a Slip such as the ones shown that were made and Gifted to me by sunknife sunknife .

Hopefully you find something in a size that works.

Glad to see you are using the slips my friend, puts a smile on my face. :) I have the same S&M Barlow as yours only with the spear blade and when I carry it I use the same size and design slip as that.

I really don't like having my slip-joint of the day rattling around in my pocket. I don't want them banging against my smartphone screen. Over the years I've tried different pocket organizers and slip sheaths. I've come to the conclusion that something like the following works best for me. Loop it around my belt and drop it in my pocket. I can either drop the pouch back into my pocket after retrieving the knife, or leave it hanging outside my pocket. The Buckaroo Pouches are from @Horsewright . The one with the metal loop was made by some French company. The name escapes me right now. From Peanut to 4" Trapper one of these three will accommodate just about every slip-joint I carry.

I'm with Peregrin Peregrin here, if my knife lacks a bail I'll slip it into a homemade sort of pouch I stitched from some old buckskin I had laying around. I will admit that it was @Horsewright that inspired it, but I don't have his leather bending skills. It does serve to keep my knife upright, and keeps the sawdust that's constantly in my pockets from polluting the pivots. 16084127037611706848538.jpg

I have never liked loose slips. FOR THIS - as noted by Hickory n steel Hickory n steel - "For me there's one glaring issue that has made me very particular in this area. I will never never get tired of seeing that Fixed Blade my friend .

I use pocket slips to keep knives banging into eachother.

I can't abide pocket knife rub, or the knives scratching and nicking each other up.

I don't carry change or keys in the same pocket as knives.

I carry entirely too many knives....so pocket slips are necessary.

Here are two I made.

Nice to have a folder protected from keys and/or other pocket detritus but the above reasoning has always nixed it for me. Mostly I have used a pocket clipped folder or my coin/watch pocket for small traditionals. HOWEVER I recently graduated to a perfect solution. Here it is ~

This particular slip has the clip on the back so is best clipped to my coin pocket for easy knife access. I tuck the bottom of the slip into my from pocket but the flap lifts free of the pocket and the knife is easy to grasp.

As much was I like this one, I have decided on an upgrade and have 2 more slips on order that will have the clip on the front so that those can simply be clipped to any pocket.

They will be based on this type of slip on the right ~

The clip will be on the front and the flap will be of a soft leather that will naturally remain folded over while in the pocket. Likely these will be 2 leather slips, as is the black version with the gray liner. The pocket clip will mostly be covered by the flap. When not in my pocket I can raise the flap to protect the knife.

Has been great fun working with "my" Etsy sheath maker. She will do this beautifully. Will be able to show photos later in January. Can't wait. I have knives that aren't carried enough due to the lack of proper carry method. So more as it happens.
If she's the same one I've bought from, I can attest to her great work. I have a clipped pocket slip as well and love it.

I always thought pockets are for organizing things you carry with you. Vic Tinker in left front;keys in right front; wallet in left rear and hankie in right rear. Pen in shirt pocket. How much more organizing does one need?? ;)

I don't much care for sheaths for folding knives. (Call them what you want, that's what they are.) I have a couple dozen laying around because they just don't get used. One exception is for carrying a folding knife outside of my pockets, and in that case I have used one. But that's not often.

What I do is have my pants modified so there's a knife slot in my pockets. In some of my higher end trousers they come that way. I don't know if it's specifically a "knife" space, but it works.

And I'll climb up on my soap box and state that I'm finding it hard to justify buying pants that don't have a cell phone pocket. You would think that, after 40 years of everyone carrying one, haberdasher's (or designers, or whatever they're calling themselves now) would have figured out we need a place to carry them.

I don't use slips, too much fumbling around.

You take it out of your pocket, you fiddle around and get the knife out of the slip, you drop the knife. You pick up the knife, you have to figure out what to do with the slip. You use the knife. You have to figure out what you did with the slip. Once you find it you put the knife back in it. Most slips are either so stiff you have to pry them open to insert the knife, or so limp that you have to work at it like you're putting a tiny pillow into a floppy pillow case. You drop the whole works into your pocket.

Just a whole lot of work to open a Slim Jim.

My every day knife is an old, beat to heck Henckels. It doesn't need protecting from other things, and any other things that come into contact with it just get what they deserve.

I carry a few more things than that, and some of them are small items that are better carried together in a pocket organizer.
You do make a perfectly valid point though, and for most people that's probably the exact setup.

That's exactly what my problem with slips has been, and I wouldn't put my knives in anything if I didn't use a pocket organizer.
