Maxpedition Bottle holder kit, review and pics

Sorry for the bump again but I love this thread.
Dug the pack out the other day and it rekindled the obsession with PSK's and hopefully getting back outside.
This munchkin takes up a lot of time these days though. :)

Hey all,

First post here. This thread got me inspired about designing a bottle holder kit. I wanted to include a small alcohol stove as part of my woods kit, I and tried out both the Maxpedition 10x4 size, as well as the 12x5 size for that. Wound up going with the latter – but if I wasn't going to include the stove, the 10x4 would have worked fine.

I detailed some of that trial-and-error process here on my survival blog:

Thanks for sharing all your ideas about this!

PS: Here's a shot of the stove/cup/bottle stack I wound up with, next to the Maxpedition 12x5:

just made this one (all hand stitched) w/ 10 oz waxed canvas (found the exact canvas, including color, that Frost River uses)- found a 1.75" high tin that is the exact diameter of my Guyot, so it will sit below stocked w/ coffee, instant soup, etc- even room for a esbit stove if need be; also fits my Olicamp mug that the Guyot can nest in if I want it along

can hand carry it ala running bottle, rig a shoulder sling or attach it to belt or pack

I bought a 10x4 bottle holder a few years ago, but never really had much of a niche for it. Until I saw this thread a few months ago, and it got the juices flowing. :)

I finished a first version of my PSK recently. I believe I have most of the C's covered, with some redundancy. There is space left for a small Altoids first aid kit, but not much else.

(The strap is from an Ortlieb dry bag, and the pouches are a Janus and a single sheath)

I plan to convert this into a brew kit for family outings, where survival is not really a concern.

May I ask what cup that is? How are stacking it? Reason I ask, I was just looking at my stuff last night. I was thinking lid, Snow Peak 700 (I think that's what I have), bottle then Trangia or maybe flip the cup upside down so it's easier to get out.

This is a Toaks 750 ml ti pot with lid.

I put the Trangia at the bottom of the main insulated compartment, then the Nalgene and nest the Toaks on top. This setup fits very snugly, both in width and height. I can invert this to put the Toaks at the bottom and Trangia on top. The lid goes into the Janus.

Thanks for the quick response. I don't have a spare Janus at the moment but may look to get another. Thanks again!

That's a great idea to use a circular tin. I've got one in my parts bin, that I was initially going to use for a PSK, but the round shape made it awkward to fit the right bits of gear inside (rectangular tins just worked out better for a PSK, in my experience). I hadn't thought to try nesting the circular tin in the water bottle stack – looks like it would be the perfect use for it!

My bottle kit has changed several times since I first posted it in this thread. Here's a more recent picture.

Last week, I decided to make up an even smaller bottle kit based on an 18 ounce bottle rather than 32 ounce.

This is what I came up with. A 6 x 6 pouch from 5.11, and a Maxpedition barnacle pouch.

How do you like the remora? I hated how the nub at the choil interfered with the precious real estate on a small knife, used a dremel to reshape it and liked it a lot more.

Yeah that nub can get in the way. I mainly use it for skinning coons or cleaning fish, and then I’m holding it in more of a pinch grip so it doesn’t bother me too much.

I really like the Maxpedition Barnacle pouch. It's the only thing I've got hanging off my urban EDC bag (a Condor E&E). I keep the Barnacle pretty full, so those zippers are always closing under pressure, but they seem so durable I don't worry about them tearing loose or binding up.

Does that 18 oz water bottle fit inside the 6x6 pouch, or do you hang it off the side?

It fits inside with just the neck sticking out.
