My thoughts on the Field knife.

Nice review Justin! [emoji122]You make me wanna get another FK [emoji106]

I would love to see a video of you using a pinch grip on the FK to clean a salmon [emoji6] it will be a great learning experience for many people I trust.

Thanks everyone for your awesome feedback, and Lorien for more insight into the design. When my user gets here, I am going to test the spark throwing power of the wedge pommel.

If it's OK with you Don, I will probably never handle a salmon again. Maybe a fillet from the store once a year, if it's a Copper River Sockeye in particular. At the same time, I will be just fine if I don't. :D

Loved the write up, Justin! You did a fantastic job relaying your observations. Very good read! Well done! And the photos of the family are beautiful...

Very nice write-up Justin. You are very proficient in procuring these things my friend. I like it when people know what they want and then get it locked down!!

Casino, Dave Brown is as nice a guy as you'll ever work with if you want a build

Justin,
That was a good read. I really enjoyed it and appreciated the pictures and video used throughout. I had to get my FK out of the drawer and fondle it as I read. Nice group of FK you've got there. I don't remember hearing about the utility grade. I'll have to search that. Or if you have a moment, could you expand on it?

Looking forward to the LC and EDC version if you do a similar write up on those.

Lorien,
I love how active you are here.

To any concerned about tip strength, I wouldn't be. It's not ParaMilitary 2 thin and along with the excellent steel and heat treat IMO it should stand up fine to anything that wouldn't be considered abuse, and probably some of that as well.

Thanks again everyone!

warder,

It's basically like the utility fighter finish wise. Tumbled first, so the spine tang and pommel are washed, and everything else is satin. I think this explains it better.

Thanks for taking the time Justin. Amazing what awesome stuff a guy like me overlooks while evaluating a blade.

Glad to be of use!

I have an annoyingly high level of attention to detail. There is lots more I could have said, but think I already went too long for most people.

The Field knife.

My sincere opinion is the Field knife is one of the greatest executed designs to be found in the knife scene today. I am thoroughly impressed with Nathan, Lorien and Jo.

Justin, my sincere opinion is that you did the best write-up on a knife I have ever read. I agree with your perspective, and I share your perception on the balance and feel... Try field processing and elk, or butchering a steer sometime with one... And your appreciation will grow some more...

Thanks Brian, I appreciate that.

I've never done anything that big. Around here you have to drive pretty far our for anything other than Deer. My brother managed to get a Moose last year, but nothing this year. Probably won't get lucky like that again for ages. You have to win a draw, then in the area you win in, get lucky and find something worth it.

Bumping this thread up for others.
Thank you for the great review JustinFournier! This definitely helps solidify my need for a Field Knife.
Lorien's added uses for the pry pommel are great also. Using it to make a bow drill socket is great!

Glad you like it. There are lots of new people coming through the forums, hope that doesn't change.

Since this was written, I have added to my FK collection and love the model even more than I did before. I could write another paragraph just on the spine.

I've had my field knife since last Friday (I won an EDC in last week's sale, and promptly traded it with another Canadian who had a new field knife circa the previous week's sale, which he found too large for his preferences). Anyways, It's the first knife I've owned that's made me consider stockpiling one or two more for a rainy day, and getting rid of other blades that'll likely be getting less time on my hip now (well... once my sagewood dangler arrives, anyways).

I concur with Justin's assertion: it's perfect [emoji108]-- initial impressions are that it's probably the most well-rounded knife I've had the pleasure of owning... and the most comfortable, to boot.

That was actually the first thing I noticed: it's got the same essential recipe as other knives in the same category and size range, and I've used lots that have had great ergos, but the FK just feels totally neutral in the hand. There's nothing to annoy or distract or abrade, but gives a positive and intuitive grip regardless of how it's held. Other than grabbing the edge itself (or palming the pommel-pry), everything touchable feels like it strikes an ideal balance between geometric definition and being appropriately eased for a more comfortable touch.

Anyways - good stuff. I'm thrilled to own one.

Yes ^^ and as the fellow Canadian who made the trade with Tim, I can say that I am already having traders remorse. I did receive a fantastic EDC in trade, which was the knife I originally wanted and is perfect for my desires, but I somehow feel a loss with the field knife that I've never experienced before with any other knife that I have passed on to it's new owner.
I have recently changed jobs and our computers are so slow that I have NO chance of winning another field knife auction, so if anyone could find it in their heart to proxy buy for me I would greatly appreciate the gesture.
