New Ebony 110 scales swelling ?

Curiosity question... has anyone ever had an old sheath worn thru from the square edges?

I have seen a lot of worn sheaths but never one that holed through. Some of those leather sheaths are over 40+ yrs old and still holding out. I own a few vintage Old Timer and Gerber lockback knives patterned after the 110 (with squared bolsters) and they have held up well over 30 years in their leather sheaths.

Can't recall ever seeing one, seems that mostly the old sheath take the form of the knife.

No. He has a solution going in search of a problem.

I have heard people complain that the 110s (before Buck started radiusing them) used to wear through pockets quickly when pocket carried--but not sheaths.

It was the very next year, I believe, after his three-dot......that some started to come from the factory with hand radiused frame edges and by the following year Buck was moving into cast frames that came already radiused.

This guy should not do knife reviews,he is a knit picker, anyone can pick up any knife brand going and find something they can knit pick on,even a sebenza at $450 has its quirks lol.
I've carried a buck 2 dot for many years in its original sheath and it's not going to hold through anytime soon lol.if he knew what he was reviewing he would know that ebony is a very good handle material that once stabilized isn't going to shrink or swell enough to notice. He makes me laugh tho lol, every video he does is comical.

Yes. I wore a hole in at least three of them. It might have been four. I wasn't keeping track. Typical wear would go something like this. First the stitching on the belt loop would fail. So I would remove what was left, and cut two slots in the back of the sheath, to pass my belt through. Then a hole would start forming on the bottom front of the sheath. When That hole wore big enough that I thought the knife might be able to escape I would buy a new sheath, and start the process over again. This was in the pre internet days, so I would buy whatever sheath I could find, that fit. There was a several year period that I carried my 110 in a sheath that had Case stamped on the front.

My first few sheaths from the seventies wore through at the bottom bolster. The next few had the straps wear through from the belt rubbing. The newest ones get all floppy and too loose. Then the snaps fail.

I still have my circa 1968 sheath and it's just fine.

Of course, many years went by when I didn't wear that knife.......it just sat packed away as my life took me in disparate places and circumstances.

Other sheaths came and went.

None ever wore out.

But I can see how a guy who wore one every day for years could probably wear one out.

Not sure you can blame the non radiused frames, though.

The idea that the square frame may have anything to do with wearing out sheaths, never occurred to me until today when reading this thread. But then constant use and wear had gradually radiused the frame of my old 2 dot.

It happened so gradually, I had actually forgotten that it ever had a square frame, until my neighbor showed me his old 110,
one day while we were talking.

Now that’s character. I’d love to see the rest of that one.

By the looks of the wear on the wood I would wager you are left handed. But if your a biker that might be because the beer is in your right .

Cheers.

No sorry. I'm right handed, and don't drink.
The wood scale on the left side of the picture cracked. It caused a sharp point, just above the pivot pin. Thinking that an ebony sliver probably would be quite painful. I sanded there until I had eliminated all sliver threats. I have pondered over the wear on the other side several times, but never did identify a cause or source for it.

I don’t like sharp corners on any part of the handle. The only thing I want sharp is the cutting edge. I have rounded the corners on my using knives, especially in pocket carry folders like the 303, 301. And the handle of my 124 had a sharp corner on the micarta near the guard that was very uncomfortable to grasp so I rounded it and now it’s just right. I don’t have any of the older square cornered 110s so I don’t have to worry about any like that.

Now If I had a rare collector for display then I’d leave the corners original.
