"Old Knives"

NYKCo. 4 1/8in Rope knife. The blade grind is interesting. The Show side has a swedge while the pile side is flat ground.

When I saw it in Bill’s catalog I almost bought it. Very different piece
It most certainly is. My heart skipped a beat when I first laid eyes on it. I haven't came across a rope knife quite like this one. Is this a normal pattern nykco made?

Bill is an absolute treasure to the vintage knife community. He's been a tremendous help to me with knife knowledge. I'm very fortunate to call him my friend.

I have no idea if it’s a pattern they made. I have pages of catalog cuts and it’s not in any of them. But then again that doesn’t mean anything really. I gave pause buying it for that very reason

It’s interesting that the tang is beat up like that and worn but the blade looks in better condition? Looks like pitting on the tang also? I’m trying to read the knife not just the tang stamp
You're 110% correct. I'm still green when it comes to old knives. That's one thing Rob "Rockman" has taught me, is to read the whole knife. This was a quick buy because it was cataloged. I'll dig into it deeper and let you know the outcome. Thank you!

When the tang is beat up/pitted and the blade is not there are a couple possibilities. One is that the blade was buffed and the tang wasn't. If that is the case with this knife they did a reasonable job because the swedge transition line is still fairly sharp. Too often people go to town with the buffing and round the transition line. The originals were done on walrus wheels and have a sharp transition.

The other possibility is that a new blade was welded onto and old tang. I don't see any of the tell tales for that with this knife.

I also noticed that the blade is thicker than the backspring.

Here's a better shot of the blade.
