"Old Knives"

I haven't added many knives to my collection in the past year or so, I've been obsessed with my other hobby, but the past several months I've had a couple of nice NYK knives come my way which I could not resist. The pearl split back whittler is 3 1/2". It belonged to Charles Lamb, chuko was his handle on BF. His son Erik was kind enough to pass it along to me. The Wohelo was a lucky snag on the big auction site. Now to catch up on some of the great knives in this thread!

A good friend has the old catalogs, and found this:

"OK Charlie, here's what I found - Your knife is a Landers, Frary & Clark model 22125 3/4 and it was not in my 1914 catalog which had both H&B and LF&C pocket knives. The next oldest catalog I have is 1919 and this is where it first appears along with the 1922, 1926 and 1931 catalogs. If there's a catalog between 1914 and 1919, I've never seen it. I've attached an image of page 37 of the 1919 catalog.

The key to identifying LF&C knives isn't the tang stamp nor the etch but rather the pins, shield, covers and blade configurations. According to the catalog, your knife has cocobolo handles, a fine glazed blade finish, brass liners, is a barehead Jack with a single iron bolster (can be verified with a magnet), 4 nickel silver pins, a large clip main and pen secondary blades with a pinned nickel silver shield. The tang stamp and etch are 100% so you have yourself at least a 106 year old New England knife, possibly a tad more. The cost in 1919 was $14.40/dozen which in today's market is $267.74 or about $22/knife - a true bargain!"

That Tom fellow thinks he's so smart just because he has the best LF&C collection in the world. :)
While I'd love to correct him on this information, he's spot on as usual.
We have nearly the same LF&C catalogs and in looking through mine, I thought it was interesting that they offered a nearly identical model # 2244-3/4 in a 3-3/8 inch size along with the 3-1/2 model. Picture enclosed.
On a side note, LF&C did produce pocket knives right up until 1939.

My friend- two outstanding knives in every way. They were worth the wait believe me!! 😮

Just superb. That N.Y.K Co. though - wow!!!

Here is an aging, barely used Landers, Frary and Clark jack marked "UNIVERSAL" on the blade!! I don't know how to date these, but maybe someone can chime in!!?? Made in New Britain, Connecticut up until the 1930s!!
The handles look like Cocobola!!View attachment 2959232View attachment 2959233

N.B. Conn over U.S.A
Very nice old LF&C Charlie . I just happen to have taken a photo a few years ago of a WWII military fixed blade made by Catt which I got at a WWII Vet's auction , on a box that I found in a house that we bought in 1973 . The knife is covering Landers , Frary & Clark . The knife has been cleaned up since the photo .

For those young people out there , the Meat Choppers were made to grind up fruit , vegetables , and meats and are currently available in almost every Antique Store . Most households had them back in the day .

That Wohelo exemplifies what makes NYKC jigged bone one of my favorites.

While on L.F& C's, here is a gorgeous Whittler that was gifted to me by a very good friend, just a wonderfully built knife!

I always love seeing these fine knives that way the blades fit so snuggly, there isn't the slightest blade rub even after all these years!

Duncan what a nice example of the cutler's art. I love seeing the nicely nestled blades in knives like this.
