Opinions on the new Fallkniven f1x?

Man up or you can wear gloves if they hurt your hands. Their suppose to be grippy for wet and cold conditions and weather proof. I would have just made some nice scales of your choice if they hurt too much. Well you may want too try the pro line, good luck.

I've searched through the forum and online for a good, reputable custom scale maker and the only one I came across isn't currently accepting scale requests--on top of that, factoring in the cost of material, labor, shipping etc would put this production knife in the $300+ range which is rather ridiculous considering what that price would get me in a custom knife.

You can use fine sandpaper to knock the texturing down a little.

I'm tempted to sand the handles now that you've mentioned it because I really do like the knife.

While I can see where your coming from who else does a san mai Laminated type blade for the price of them. I'd just wait there will most likely be handles being made down the road or just sand them down a bit.

Been a lurker for years--just received the F1XB from BHQ today. The thermorun handle scales are terribly uncomfortable in hand and feel cheap. Feels like they'd easily rip flesh. I have a physical job and work with my hands in addition to having barbell calluses so it's not like I have keyboard warrior hands covered in lotion all day. All my other knives are micarta, G10 or wood. 5 minutes after holding the knife I sent an email to BHQ asking for a return label. I don't have the patience to wait for aftermarket scales. It also arrived rather dull... but I love everything else about this knife.

The texture is aggressive, true that.

I sanded mine slightly down and then I did a comparison with some of my favorite knife handles(a BRKT Bushcrafter and a finnish puukko). To my surprise the F1x handle was not any worse than the other two!!

So absolutely no complaints on the grip from over here, looking forward to see the different aftermarket scales..

I too would be very interested in both the F and the S1x if a few guys with a CNC would get on it already! ;)

I'd probably ask that the scales come down over the guard, so the beveled edge of the scale would improve both the appearance, and soften the potential roughness of using the knife in a way that has your finger scraping against it.

Also, make the overall girth large enough to fit a normal/average man's hand, not a 5 yo boy...just sayin'.

Sounds like you prefer the old version :)

Could be! Does the original S1 have a larger handle? That would be the key, but I'm looking to move to CoS, since I already have an A1 in VG-10. So, the only true alternative would be for the S1x to have a handle that is larger than the S1 Pro.

Unless I sell the A1 and get the A1x...grrr...LOL

I enjoy the classic A1 in VG10. It's chopped and batoned more tree branches for me than Paul Bunyon in the past 5 years. I can still slice paper effectively with minor touch ups, though I'll admit, the convex edge took a little time to get right. Second admission: I really suck at sharpening. :)

You're not missing anything!

I honestly don't see a great difference between the chemistry of VG-10 and CoS:

http://www.zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.php?nm=CoS,VG-10&ni=3493,4001&hrn=1&gm=0

Am I missing something? VG-10 seems fine to me. I also own a couple of Fallknivens with CoS and don't see a big difference in use and frequency of sharpening.

Interesting! I only have a vg10 version (and am very happy), but have read a lot of posts saying the Cos holds an edge significantly longer. For the price I’d probably rather have two knives, but I’m a hoarder.

I couldn't decide on the smaller F1X or the larger S1X with Tungsten Carbide finish, so I bought then both! I will likely sell the smaller F1X and keep the S1X as my go to camp/field/survival knife. I have not used them yet, but they do feel as I'd expected.

Hello Blade-people (first post!) I've been on parental leave for almost 3 months now and I managed to survive the daily choirs and challenges by secretely reading and buying FK knives (knifeoholic). A new interest that has blossomed as a result of taking my son on daily hikes.

My most recent purchase is the F1x in satin. In comparison to the non-pro FK's I must admit that the handle is quite different in terms of ergonomics. I still haven't got used to it and to be honest it is quite uncomfortable to hold - even with my thick aligator skin. Probably the worst ergonomics in my collection (mostly Mora and FK).

The positives, it's a tank! Solid piece and probably my number 1 for more demanding tasks and/or abuse. It's the knife that I'd probably end up lending if someone in the camping group asked.

Aesthetically I was more drawn to the tungsten carbide version. The DLC-like coating is really beautiful when you see it in reality (pics don't do justice). I still ended up with the satin since I was doubtful about the looks after a couple of sharpenings. Looking forward to future reviews on this topic as it probably will impact my S1x/A1x purchase.

Cost wise - well it's expensive. Overpriced? Not IMO compared to the PRO series. You get more bang for the buck if you are willing to compromise on the ergonomics. I'm also confident that aftermarket handle alternatives will become a thing.

So would I buy it again? Probably not since I can't get over the ergonomics for this size of knife. I would however be more forgiving if it was an S1x or A1x. I use those knives for more heavy tasks in conjuction with gloves. Kind of drving your small Porsche vs. Mack Truck.

Gotta go - my son is screaming... :)

Welcome and nice first post. I'm also a Fallkniven fan as I have the A1 Pro model a regular F1 a Thor and Modern Bowie and a WM1. I'm looking at the A1X mostly now as its the size I like most. I've also been looking at the A2 model which you don't hear about much. I'm sure down the road someone or Fallkniven will offer handle replacements of a different material. Well have fun with that new knife and the little one.

I'd really like some red canvas or linen micarta scales for this one..

The OEM scale texture is very aggressive, but this also aids in a very secure grip so it won't slip out of your hand.

You are so right on the grip being secure. Perhaps this is FK's pure intention which also aligns with the overall tactical sense. I think the X-series main strength is its pure focus on functionality. Sorry for not pointing this out to potential buyers - this knife will not slip out your hands, even when used in more slippery conditions like slicing/hunting or heavy rain.

I was thinking of passing this knife on to someone else... but this got me thinking. Perhaps I underestimate the versatility that it actually provides.

Most agree, the handles are a tough sell on the x models. The fact that they are so tiny on the S and F models makes them even less palatable because you have to grip them harder. If one of the various scale makers on the forum would make a line for the x models, they'd rake in some cash for sure! Come on guys!

Welcome to the forum, Slackie!

That's because most people just buy an axe at that point.... LOL.;)

I’ve been looking closer at the possibilities of upgrading the handle scales on my F1X and it is not as straight forward as I initially thought. This is due to the fit of the sheath. It is a really tight fit where the zytel sheath goes over the handle scales.

Another thing is that the OEM scales are growing on me, the grip feels very secure. Yes it’s somewhat small but with my size 9 hands this is not a very big problem.

The sheath cover about 1/3 of the handle so there is room for a cola bottle handle design, like on the BRKT Bushcrafter. That would be sweet!!

i have one i like it yet the handle is too thin and too much texture. the knife is also heavy for the size it has... i got the f1 in cos and the f1x in cos and sadly i would take the standard f1 over the f1x infact i would not get either one but look at TRC/bradford/brk.

I've been using it a bit more lately and I also must say that I have grown to like the OEM handles. Also size 9 hands...

Well its super grippy thats for sure! If it was a bit thicker in the middle it would have been better for me for sure.
