Photos Peavey • Cant Hook • Cant Dog • Hook on a Stick

I have had only three uses for short handled Peavey/cant hooks. First is on the sawmill to turn/adjust the stick on the carriage. Second is the same, turn/adjust, the stick on the hewing (broad axe) yoaks. Last is to adjust the round log, hewn log, or heavy timber in log cabin or timber frame construction/reconstruction.

I never see cant hooks or peavies in my neck of the woods. When I found it in the antique store my first thought was to cut extra metal parts and turn it into cant hook. Is there anything that this log jack cannot do that cant dog can?

For a home user, that setup is the beans. As long as you are rolling in free ground, the extra part of the head that makes the "jack" wont get in the way so much, and being able to lift a stick sure makes cutting those curvy ones easier when you're making firewood by yourself.
It does make them heavy to carry, and kind of awkward to pry between logs with, tho.

I wouldn't cut it off, just buy another one. Lol

I only have one cant dog and one pickaroon. I purchased the cant dog prior to when i started collecting axes. I've always used them primarily for rolling big logs or helping me roll a hung up tree free of the branches it's hung up on. I saved how much a paid for it for the last photo....ouch. i know now i could've found one much cheaper.

I love the swell on this pickaroon. A nice knob end. It's an old Great Northern Paper co. tool. Hence the GNP co. stamp on the haft.

This cant dog has the nicest piece of white ash i think I've ever seen. They hung it perfectly! Perfect i say!

In the end I'm glad to support Peavey. Now i can buy vintage ones just for the heck of it.

That is a pretty nice looking swell for a Peavy tool!

Thank you! That's the swell on the GNP co. pickaroon. It also has an ash handle and i wouldn't be surprised if it was a Peavey. Unfortunately i don't know that. It makes sense that GNP would source tools locally for their pulp mills. I don't know how many pickaroon manufactures used an aluminum wedge and riveted them in like this one. Perhaps that could help identify the maker? It does have a tempered carbon steel tip. 15488183586924914348277296988310.jpg 1548818392224581385854843893105.jpg 1548818419027239770744452737531.jpg 15488186597734421686174413119124.jpg
Also when i purchased it the light colored part of the haft was covered with electrical tape. Evidently whoever had it didn't want anyone to know it came from Great Northern Paper co. Lol . Maybe someone took it home from the mill as a "bonus".

I need to find a better background, sorry. The big Oshkosh has been really handy for side-loading logs on my atv trailer. Ooh! Random thought! Doesn't Oshkosh make army big rigs? Anyway, I never realized how much I needed a peavey till I got one. I'm working on finishing a handle for the peavey head in the next few days.
edit: I just realized I forgot the log carrier. I'll get another pic tomorrow.

It's certainly nice seeing pictures of pickaroons, hookaroons, whateveraroons, hooks on a stick. I purchased a Council hookaroon and they come unsharpened. I'd never used one before so didn't know how sharp I wanted it to be. I've been slowly making it sharper and sharper as I find it bouncing out of some woods. Looks like it's time for me to get back on the files and make it even pointier!

That is a pickaroon!
Probably a knickname is in order.

It's pinned but if that same flare was towards the top, I bet it wouldn't need a pin at all.
