I’m not sure where to put a bark spud but it’s a thing on a stick so here?...
Really cool shape to this one.
It’s a G. White Axe Co. It was shown in this 1899 brochure they produced.

They boast that their bark spud is “one of the best made”!
Also check out the 3 different finishes they offered on their axes!

Thanks for sharing. Good looking tool. A little edge work and it'll be ready to roll.

Ahh! Thank You! I’ll file my spuds over there.

I have a cant hook that I’ll use to help restore the dignity to this thread...

It’s got some interesting marks but I don’t know anything about it. Except that I think short ones like this were for use in mills...?

I haven’t done anything to it yet, it could really use some surface cleaning and oil.

Dixie Logging Tools aka Dixie Industries?

Warren Axe and Tool co. She cleaned up real nice! Raised letters which I thought was pretty cool.

I know it's just a cant dog but it's hard not to find beauty in simple things sometimes...

Paid $45 for it. It's been at the antique dealer for months and I've been eyeballing it. And eyeballing it. And eyeballing it! I finally decided I'd regret it if I came in one day and it was gone. So here it is! Thanks for looking!

Excellent decision.

Really nice Warren hook.

There was just enough daylight left to get some full length shots of this Pike Pole. It’s 14’ 9” long (the handle is 14’.) straight without any cracks.

I put some BLO on the handle and hit the pike end with steel wool and gun oil.

The handle is original and beautifully tapered with a contoured knob at the end.
I was told when they switched to fiberglass handles but I forget... It was pretty early.

Edit: To add the picture of the crazy river men with baby and dancing dog on a log raft... I don’t even know which one is more unbelievable?!?

Great job you guys, digging up and lovingly preserving these great old tools, thank you.
Fantastic old photo,Ithinkverydeeply,thanks!:)
Those guys look to be armed with 20'-ies,probably need them too.
You can still get a pike up to 24',i think.I've used a 20',it was a bit too much.
Trailsawyer is right,it's been aluminium hafts for decades now,and as gorgeous as that (doug fir,i'd imagine)wooden one is,over the course of a day that weight would add up very seriously...(mine is Al. and a humble 12',and i don't regret it being as light and short as it is).
Josh, right on,it's a beautiful Warren hook.If it's any consolation, you also made a great deal on that,i just bought a peavey(needed only the handle but it was the same price as the entire tool),paid $206 for it...I needed it,use it every day,and though nowhere as classy it is stamped "forged in USA" on the hook...(i was pleasantly surprised, got it in our tiny local hardware store, and fully expected "made in China" as most objects in there...).Handle seems ok,not entirely straight-grained,and is two-toned,but clear, and seems to be holding up...

Thanks! I'm aware that I got a good deal and I'm tickled pink to have a nice one. I needed a cant dog a couple years ago when a tree I was falling got hung up. Cost me $101 for a brand new peavey with a. "48 white ash handle. Even that is a steal compared to what you had to pay! Here's that peavey;
N7uibRh.jpg

Right on,Josh,a decent one,and what lovely-looking grain in that ash...That's a necessary tool around the place, and a very good point:Often,a hung tree can be rolled off whatever by rotating it with a peavey...(also a pinched bar).
It Can be a bit hairy once the tree lets go,can break the handle,or get you with it,but still a handy move.
Peavies like both your new one and that Warren all have an unfortunate built-in flaw:That wood inside socket is neither vented nor drains nor yet is in any way isolated...(as a builder you know how wood and steel have this chemical disaffinity of a sort, and ideally like a gasket of some sort,tar-paper or whatever).
I'd imagine you're decent to your tools and always put them away, which pretty much takes care of all this.
I'm a terrible beast to mine, alas, and they're forever either soaking wet or that + frozen...:(
The one i got(Dixie Industries, apparently) is similar to my old one in that the bottom of socket is open.Still,i sometimes think of contriving to smear a bunch of roofing tar on the inside somehow...
But ideally the socket would be a "skeleton" type like you do see sometimes,as the forces are all in the top and the bottom of it,the rest can be a daylighted strap arrangement...
