Are they really that big!?
What a monster

Nothing like that here in Australia. Except maybe the german shepherd that lives next door

There are a bunch of subspecies and size varies:

Height: 2.6 – 2.8 ft. (Adult, At Shoulder)
Mass: 66 – 180 lbs (Male, Adult), 51 – 120 lbs (Female, Adult)

As a comparison, my Rotti (on the small side) is around 90 pounds, big ones are ~120.

There are 13 wolf subspecies in North America.

The Northwestern in @beeinak’s photo in Alaska is one of the biggest. Here in and around Yellowstone, we have the Northern Rocky Mountain one, a bit smaller.

One of my coolest experiences was a wolf walking into my camp at Polychrome Pass in Denali.
It came up and lowered its head in a submissive stance and when we did nothing to scare her off she continued pouncing and digging out ground squirrels.

I mentioned it to a ranger I ran into the next day on our way out and he mentioned that he was familiar with the wolf who inhabited that territory we made our camp in.

Haha! Fair. But they are quite rare!
We had our backyard populated with redbacks but they are quite easy to treat now
We've got black widows here, in the U.S., which are related to redbacks. They're not really a big deal. IIRC, there hasn't been a reported death from a black widow bite since 1982.

We don't have anything like the funnel web spiders, inland taipan, eastern brown snake, or salt water crocodiles (unless you count grizzlies, but they're nowhere near as aggressive). Also, the box jellyfish species we have here aren't as dangerous as what you've got down there.

I think I read that there hasn't been a death from the funnel web spider since 1981, so I guess that kind of falls into a category similar to our black widows to some people. They're way, way more aggressive than our widow spiders though. Those fangs are nuts!

Of all the dangerous animals in Australia that I'm aware of, the salties are what I'd be most cautious about.

As an American that has read up on Aussie wildlife and statistics about their lethality (from Australian based sources), I think the media sensationalizes things. Most Americans have a distorted perception of the dangers posed by Australian wildlife.

I think this is the same thing that happens when other parts of the world look at the United States and firearms. The media skews reality.

when I look at statistics, (not the media) I see that, on average, 7 kids per day are killed in the US via firearms in recent years. 125 killed per day, all in. Approx 50% more guns exist in the country than Americans.

I'm not sure how anyone who is aware of those numbers, and how they compare to other countries, could think that there isn't a problem. If anything, I'm of the opinion that 'the media', (parenthesis added to encompass more than just corporate/trad media) skews the reality away from acknowledging there might be a problem.

not trying to be political here, just putting out a perspective on the topic from another part of the world.

If all you're doing is looking at the "statistics" and not how they're compiled, where they come from, etc. then that's a problem.

However, this isn't the place to discuss that; it is a political conversation.

I'm going to be honest and some may disagree with me for calling this out. I feel no anger saying this. You clearly made political statements, though not aggressively. I think it's disingenuous to say something in the vein of your comments and follow it up with "not trying to be political". If it weren't political, you wouldn't have to explain that you're "not trying to be political".

It's the same as when someone says "not to be rude". If you think you have to add that in, it's rude, so then just don't say it if you don't "want" to be rude.

more statistics (quick search, so i could be incorrect). 58% of gun deaths in US are suicides. and there is an average of 132 people that commit suicide daily in the US.

EDIT: my apologies, for furthering the conversation Blues Blues . will remove if you want me to.

personally, I'd prefer no politics whatsoever in this forum. When poli topics arise, though, counterpoints should be expected. Which brings me back to my first point 😇
I don't feel that I said anything political. I spoke about media exaggeration. You brought up gun statistics and made it political. It seems like you wanted to get your political view/statement in and then shut the door, which (to me) seems hypocritical. Just because you're a mod, doesn't make you correct in your actions and you're continuing to justify it.

Gentlemen,

Opinions needed!

I’m trying to dip my toe into higher end folders, to bide the time until the CPK folder comes to fruition…. Please help me choose from the pic below. Does anyone have any experience with “Snake Eyes”?

Currently, leaning towards the skull/skeleton with the pentagram carved into the forehead with the scantily clad lady with green hair.

Budget: $29.99 or 2 for $50

Interested in your thoughts! ☺️
