Spyderco Wire Clip Issue

Boxed up and shipping to Spyderco today.
To be continued..

They did it right on the Urban not so much the Sliverax. I don't really get the theory of putting the screw at the bend. It should be closer to the middle

After looking and tinkering, it looks like a design flaw.

It takes no effort at all to change the tension on this clip. This will go in for warranty work, and if that isn't satisfactory you'll see a chaparral on the sales thread going for cheap.

Looks a lot like mine. Look forward to your update after it returns from Spyderco.

I had the same issue mounting to left side of an FRN Para3 LW M390 / DLT- I sent it to Spyderco for warranty service and they returned it saying nothing could be done (they did offer a trade in credit) I think there is an issue with the mould they are using for FRN. I used a small milling bit on a dremel to double the depth of the left-side clip channels to solve the problem.

P2P, did Spyderco ever resolve this issue for you? I'm having the same problem with the clip on my Chaparral.
Just FYI, Spyderco just revised (CQI) the Chaparral FRN to improve how the clip sits in the scales. Not sure but I believe the grooves are a little deeper now. I have my first run Chap LW on me today. I've never had an issue with the clip loosening up but it does look like those two ends are sitting proud of the grooves

I had to dig out all the FRN in those channels to get my clip to fit deeper. It now works great, but definitely is a design flaw. I just carved them out. The metal shows through now.

They wound up shipping me a new model which was cool. The problem didn’t get solved in my case however. The clip barely sits on the scales, usually one side of the wire clip lifts off the scale by a little.

Due to this, the chaparral has only been carried outside the house once. I was on vacation to Colorado and had to take an airline. I thought, better to lose that one than another I would miss, if stolen or lost.

Its a shame because every other aspect if the knife is perfect. This model certainly didn’t help with my preconceived skepticism of wire clips. I prefer a lot of tension on my clips.

Officially giving up. Perhaps the newer CQI has solved this issue. Unfortunately this one will wind up sold, or I’ll just throw it in my wife’s purse. Such a great cutter too:-/.

All isn’t lost though, got the new S90V delica. No problem with that clip. This thing is all business. Factory edge was obtuse, ready to rock after thinning out the edge.

Hello, I just wanted to share my experience with the spyderco chaparral, mainly for those researching whether to buy or not to buy. First of all, I am very pleased with the knife. The quality is exceptional. The knife came razor sharp out of the box. Blade centering is spot on. So, on the issue. I can happily report, that the issue with the clip on spyderco chaparral FRN seems to be resolved (at leas on newer batches of the knives). I bought mine this month (june 2020) from knivesandtools.com (european site, although I think every major site/store has newer batches of spydercos in stock). After watching multiple videos and looking at multiple pictures online, it looks like they moved the pocket clip crew and reinforced parts of the scales where the clip "legs?" make contact. Nothing sticks out, the clip is completely flush with the scales. Also the clip makes full contact with the scales and the retentions is strong enough for such a small knife. Hopefully I helped someone who was deciding and hesitant after researching a bit. I am a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted everything to be 100%.

Pictures are worth 1000 words.....

Hi P2P,

Sorry for your hassles. I'll let Charlynn know it's coming in.

Thank you Sal, however a knife was already sent back to me. I appreciated the customer service I received. The knife I got back was a replacement so they could hold on to my model for research, that’s how it was worded to me I believe.

I will say the Chaparral I received was perfect in every way, but the clip. Since I had given this model a fair shake twice, I said my farewells. it wound up getting sold to another member here.

If as M marticos posted, the newer models have modified the clip retention, then I may keep my mind open to getting another in the future. Until then, I have a S90V delica keep punishing.

Cheers!

Never been a big fan of the wire clip. I can see why people like it, beeing low profile and all that but IMO it is just to weak and flimsy.

I prefer the standard clips, but YMMV.

And keep rocking that Delica, I have a M390 comming my way but the covid is REALLY slowing the shippment down... At this point I just hope it still gets here.
