Did a nice little hike on Sunday. First one of the New Year. My wife had a girls day gathering with her six sisters so my Bil and I decided to hit the woods. Saturday night a small storm front rolled in and dropped about 6 inches. Just enough to be fun. The weather was supposed to be partly sunny and temps in the high twentys. When we started that was a accurate forecast. After we peaked the ridge the other side of the mountain was completely different. The temp dropped into the low twentys, Snow Squalls rolled in along with 20mph winds. We pressed on and enjoyed some hot apple water and some chow at a abandoned cabin. Our water bottles and apples had begun to freeze in our outter pack pockets. I quickly put my pocket rocket burner to work. The wind was picking up and time was pushing us so it was time to push back to the truck. Ended up doing about 14 miles in 7 hours. Not a bad days hike. Hope y'all enjoy the pics.

I didn't need my Bk2 for extraction my Bk62 saved the day. I don't know how these vehicles get 3 miles up the sides of mountains. This was the first of two we found that day. The second one is a station wagon about a 1/2 mile further up the foot trail. Now what's really crazy is the engine was gone!!!! Somebody actually took the engine and carried it 4 miles back down the mountain. This isn't unusual though. We've come across many vehicles on our climbs. Literally on the sides of mountains.

On top the ridge. I'm sporting my Beckerhead Tee and I'm wearing my @azwelke Bk62 sheath attached to my converted fly fishing chest rig.

all we got Friday was ice, then the bottom dropped out of the temps.
thanks for bringing us along!
The sun was going down and the wind became sustained with some pretty good skin burning breath taking gust rolling up the ridge. Temps dropped to about 10° without wind chill that night.

Great pics !!! ...

We got to take a short ride on horseback in the snow Sunday but I miss the mountains a lot especially when the snows come ... my horse is a bit high strung to start with and hasn't been rode much the last couple years so taking pictures from the saddle would have probably been an adventure ...

Maybe if we get a bit more snow later this week I'll try it anyway ... if I can find time to get out for a short ride.

Good stuff Tanker. Looks like a nice hike. I’m liking the chest rig setup.

Did you feel the need for any extra traction devices? I’m always contemplating picking up a set of micro spikes or something similar for my winter hikes. Just not sure if I’d ever really use them.

Thanks for the pics. I really need to get out sometime soon. Getting a little bit of cabin fever up here…

The The that's all folks

This is the kind of stuff I really miss about NY state. We have to drive an hour just to find something that looks like a hill. Thanks for sharing brother. Looks awesome.

Looks like a great way to spend a Sunday. Chilly and a bit long for me. The most I have pushed my wife to do in a day was about 8 miles. She hikes with a camera in her hand, usually with a macro lens in place. It makes for slow going. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I carry a handful of 3/8 long hex head sheet metal screws. If the need arises I’ll put a few into my soles. They aren’t long enough to thru my shoe and give me some extra traction.

Nice!

Thanks for sharing your outing.
I think a little hammer work, a little paint...that truck would be good to go!

Great tip on the screws.
They actually come when I order new wader boots sometimes. I have never installed them in my wader boots, but your point will prompt me to put some in my truck box, just in case.

Tanker, great day hiking!! I want to go back out again before summer.

I wanted to use Stabilicer's, https://stabil.implus.com/ but because of the trails around here, I finally chose Grivel G10 crampons. (You don't really need them, until you really need them.)

Thanks for the heads up. The Trex might be an option. It’s a tough call. Sometimes when I’m climbing I need to slip and not have traction if that makes any sense.
