The Basic 5" Field Knife - Thoughts and Impressions

First thing I do usually with any new blade is make a meal with it. Nothing fancy tonight, just potatoes and eggs.

It's a pleasure to work with. The Kephart is a favorite of mine in the kitchen but this one outshines it in every way really.

If the weather is agreeable, I have a lot outdoor chorin' to do tomorrow. Next up is to get this guy dirty.

Being that I just received this a few days back, it's pretty premature for me to have a lot of "thoughts and impressions". However, I did take the little BFK out today, and played with it for a bit. I'm still getting used to the edge geometry when it comes to carving and feathersticking...

My Carothers addiction has begun. I originally found CPK while searching fighting and bush knives on youtube. That led me down the rabbit hole of metallurgy for knives. Then I saw a magnacut video with the torture testing of CPK knives.

I jumped on the sale of a Basic 5 FK which came in the mail a few days ago. All I can say is wow! This is my first purchase of a semi custom knife ever and it totally blew my expectations out of the water. Researching more into the various CPK knives, I now know my holy grail. I'm salivating hoping that another Signature FK3 sale comes around so I can order one with the ECAM scales. That swedging on those looks soooo dang sexy!

All that aside, can anyone tell me what the scale material on mine is? It looks too dark for natural Micarta.

Welcome and congrats!!!!!

The FK3 is a whole different animal!!!!!

Man, I've been beating on some version of a TOPS 107E "Steel Eagle" for more years than I can remember. Just by usage and mileage, it is my FAVORITE "field knife". As I've stated before, for me, a "field knife" is a robust Jack-of-all-Trades, with a blade length of between five and seven-and-a-half inches.

Recently, I opted to lessen the size and weight of the "kit" that I keep in my truck. Honestly, the BFK is quickly becoming my new favorite "field knife" beater and blade of choice. Like its big brother, the SDFK, the "footprint to toughness" ratio of the BFK is pretty remarkable.

What a great knife... ❤️
