The Les George Knives Thread

I absolutely love my Myna, but nothing is smoother than these Servos in my opinion.View attachment 2786436

After a few weeks of use, I would agree. Yeah - the Servo is a little smoother. It's smooth enough that I have to make sure I don't have anything in the way when I index-finger close, because it falls like a guillotine after the detent.

That's pretty impressive to me. I expect that from great liner-lock flippers - the Skaha II and Holt Haptic have that kind of liquid drop, but it seems to be more rare with frame locks.

Well, that makes me want to try an MK3, which I've held off on to this point. If I have one little critique for the thumb-stud deployed LGs, it's that I feel like the detent is a bit stiff for my preference. If the MK3 is a bit softer, I would definitely welcome it.
You’ll also end up loving the design. There’s a really nice one available on the fb group right now with a sw blade I believe which is actually pretty hard to come by.

I was in the same boat. Just looking at pictures, the MK3 was the least appealing LG design to me. Something about this one with the DLC frag handles just spoke to me though so I decided to give it a shot. After getting it in hand I totally understand why they are so popular. I would say I'm still not generally crazy about dagger-style designs but this one is a keeper for sure. So far I don't know that I'll try the monster disc either...it feels pretty damn nice as it is. The detent is definitely soft, not sure if this is common or just on my example, but it kind of matches the ultra-smooth frictionless action well. Makes for a really satisfying slow roll and is still easily flickable.

The action of my Talos and MK3 definitely reassure me that something isn't quite right with my VECP. It's not terrible, but it doesn't feel anything like these other two. If the new washers don't get it moving right I'll send it back to Les and see if he can work some magic on it. At that point I'll probably make a choice between it and my Servo...I do love the Servo but drop-shutty flippers just don't hold the spot in my heart that they once did. That said, I like my Talos enough that having it and the VECP feels a bit redundant. Decisions decisions.

I agree with the redundancy of the vecp and v2 talos. That’s why I’m down to only my morph talos. I would probably let that one go too if it wasn’t my only morph left. While not a huge morph fan I really like the morph pattern on the new talos.

This is why I’m a huge fan/proponent of the v1 talos because the size makes it a different knife from the vecp. There’s currently one up for trade on the fb group and he may be willing to sell if an offer is made.

My biggest complaint of Les is too many drop points which results in a lot of redundancy in collecting his knives. I wish he would just do different blade shapes on the vecp or even the new Talos and I’d be ba buyer again. Because of this I’ve been very content with my LGs. The only thing I would currently buy/hunt would be a dammy myna or thumb disk/stud myna if he ever does them. This is supposed to be the year of the myna so keeping my fingers crossed.

While I would like to check out a V1 Talos, the V2 and the VECP already feel like big knives to me so I'm not sure something bigger would be a staple in my rotation no matter how good it is. I agree it would be cool to different see some blade shapes on the Talos and VECP. A Myna with a disk would also be cool.

I hear ya and find 3.5” blades to be my preference although lately I’ve resorted to keeping a 3” blade on me in case I have to pull out a knife in front of customers. Been doing this ever since a customer and my interior designer gasped when I pulled out my mk3 to cut open a plastic baggie. I have to admit it felt like overkill 😂.

I do like having the option of a larger blade if needed. Truth be told the OG Talos carries almost the same as the vecp. But what I love about em is flicking out that big @$$ blade. It flys out with authority!

It's always hard to tell how the general public will respond. I usually keep a Case or Victorinox handy in case I think I might need a knife in a situation that I could draw unwanted attention for using the wrong one. My in-laws have seen me use large Sebenzas (3.625" blade) hundreds of times around my property and theirs without a second thought, but when I whipped out the Servo (3.47" blade) to cut tape on Christmas gifts they jokingly commented on the huge knife I was carrying. My father in law regularly carries the largest Cobratech OTF which also has a ~3.5" blade. Non-knife people are a mystery to me 🤷‍♂️

Haha, I’m thinking about dumping all my real world non knife buddies and only associating with internet knife buddies like all the cool kids are doing these days.

After some beers on Saturday I decided a picture of these two together was a necessity! Although different in many ways they share so many distinct design queues that are signature to Les’ work.

My 2018 MokuTi Harpy Deluxe (Les made 10 for the Wilson Combat Custom Makers Alliance) & Necroanax Necroanax 2018 Rockeye made for the Solvang Custom Knife Show.

Derek was kind enough to let me hold onto this one for a few days so I could do a session and make this shot a reality 🤙🍻 I promise I’ll get her back to you this week 😉😂

Well, got in new washers from Les yesterday for the VECP. He also sent a sticker because he's a cool guy. The knife didn't immediately feel better and I didn't have a ton of time to play with it last night, but after carrying and fidgeting for a couple hours this morning so far it does appear to be breaking in and getting smoother whereas it did not seem to be doing that before. The pivot is set to have the blade centered and no blade play, and it is starting to drop to my thumb more often than not when I release the lock. It never did this with the old washers unless the pivot was loose enough to induce blade play. It may be a bit early to tell, but I'm optimistic at this point that it will continue breaking in and have the action I always thought it should.

Out of curiosity, what are you guys using for lube? I have always loved and been well satisfied with OCD4EDC Slick'em All in my washer knives, and that is what is currently in my Talos that has an awesome action as well as all my CRKs. I keep KPL around for my bearing knives and have tried all weights of it in my Sebenzas, but never liked it as much as the Slick'em All grease on the washers. When discussing the VECP with the guy I bought my MK3 from, he told me if I ever tried Gunny Glide I'd "forget about all that other crap". I'm assuming that means my MK3 is running on Gunny Glide and it does have a truly incredible action, though I know the MK3 is kind of known for this anyway. I'm a nerd for this type of stuff so naturally I have some Gunny Glide on the way to experiment with. Between all three weights of KPL, Nano-Oil, Slick'em All, CRK grease, random gun oil, etc. I've never found that going from one lube to another can take a knife with a bad action and make it great, but I can definitely feel the difference sometimes. It's not so much bad to good, but already good to slightly better...sometimes.

Another side note...my VECP came in wearing this RGT clip. I wasn't sure what to expect but it is a really good clip, to the point that I'm considering picking up another one for the Talos.

I use Gunny Glide on the washers/bearings and a tiny drop of Gunny Slides on the detente ball (credit to ccsmith449 ccsmith449 for the detente ball tip). It hasn't failed me yet!

Your photography never ceases to astound me. 🥵

As someone who is deeply nerdy about all things Les George, I do love how it's often possible to pin down the year a piece was made by comparing the features (pivots, Damascus patterns, contouring, clips, etc.). The reason those two knives look so similar despite being different models is because they were both made in 2018. Considering Les's history of being blown up and "blown up at", it's up to us dorks to properly document the history.

I use a 3n1 oil from Lowes. Cost maybe $5 and works great. I always break down a knife when I get it in. The majority of the time I see significant improvement in the action and rarely ever have to do maintenance again. I’ve thought about trying others but honestly it’s so good n cheap I figure any improvement would be insignificant.

Keeping it light today

Personally, I use TW25 on my washer knives. I have a few P Series SIGs and have a large tube on hand for them so I tried it on a couple of knives, and I have been a huge fan ever since!
