The Pathfinder Club - Members Only!

This popped up on a popular auction site. These seem to be fairly scarce. Does anyone own one?

TAH,

Take a look at the short article by Joe Houser in the December 2014 newsletter.

Bert
Thanks! That was a pretty interesting newsletter to read. The article by the Ukrainian Buck collector was from a different time. Anyone know if Sergey ever got his 110 with an ATS-34 blade?

Welcome to the Pathfinder Club and BladeForums, Puggernaught! Once the Heritage knife arrives, you'll have great collection of four variations from four different eras. 👍

Welcome Slice-and-dice! Congrats on becoming the 123rd member the ultra-prestigious Pathfinder Club where only the most discerning and knowledgeable sportsmen appreciate the fine qualities of the 105 for all of their blademanship requirements. In other words, the 105 is a great knife. 😁👍

May I be added to the list as well? I have seven 105 Pathfinders, and have acquired the itch, looking for more!

Currently I have a very minty 440C, a standard 420HC, a 5160 in cocobolo, a red micarta S30V, and inexplicably, three in D2 with cocobolo, although one of those is going off to be reworked with a burl madrone haft.

Now that I know the green micarta S35VN stands a good chance of turning brown, I’m shopping around for one of those as well. Obviously these are collectibles for me, but I do alternate carrying a D2 and the 420HC when I’m in the woods.

I’ve missed out twice now on an unusual configuration, 5160 with black phenolic and brass pommel/guard. That is a particularly attractive knife! Were there many of those made?

Have there been other steels used in the past besides 425?

Otony

I bought one a little while back and really liked the size. Of course I had to have more.
Welcome to the club, JLRubicon! You can never go wrong with Phenolic, but that stag handle really stands out. Needless to say, the 105 is the perfect Jeep knife.👍

Welcome Otony2! Sounds like you have a nice, rounded Pathfinder collection. Feel free to post a group photo if convenient. Looking forward to seeing Leroy's work when finished.

I really do like the Pathfinder. The 118 Personal that many find to be the best and members here also are in the 118 club too so it’s definitely debatable. I just find the curve on the 118 is so extreme. The 105 has a top curve or narrowing at the last few inches of the blade whilst keeping the edge fairly level (no upswing similar to the Kalinga and 118.
So though i own both i prefer to carry the 105 as fixed EDC. If considering a shorter EDC i prefer the 102 or 101 over the 118. But EDC is not skinning. Thoughts? Am i right? Tell me if i’m wrong.

I prefer the 105 over the 118 for the same reason. And I do like the 102 and (surprise!) the 121. The BUCK knives that are bigger, like the 119, 120 and 124 I have never found a use for. Also the Kalinga and Akonua. All those knives are fun to collect however. But then they sit.

But EDC is not skinning. Thoughts? Am i right? Tell me if i’m wrong.
I suppose it depends on the person; but, for me, you are not wrong - EDC is not skinning. And I prefer the 105 over the 118...though, admittedly, I don't own a 118

Yes exactly. Edc vs skinning. I have used the Kalinga to cut my steak at home during family dinners. It does cut like a really sharp heavy knife allowing the blade to go through it like butter.
I now use my 117 for meat cutting duty.

You're askin' the wrong person, David. 😁

Seriously, aesthetically speaking, I think the 118 is a great looking knife and would perform beautifully for its intended purpose. Every time I see Old Hunter Old Hunter 's vintage 118 photos, I swear I'm gonna buy one.

But Buck nailed it when they designed the Pathfinder to be “an all-purpose knife for general outdoor use. Ideal for those who need a rugged knife.” 🙂

I can’t tell you if you are right or wrong about a knife choice. What feels right to me might not feel right to you. I know I can skin and dismantle a deer (or any other game animal) with nearly any knife - if you know how then the particular knife doesn’t matter. I think with time we all develop preferences, you have yours, I have mine, and so does everyone who uses their knives. I am like Cal in that I have big knives, can use them on game, but don’t prefer to, I like the 102-105-118 in the Buck Knife line for medium sized big game and I like the 118 best of all of them. OH
