The Schrade Walden 153 Uncle Henry...Golden Spike & Schrade 153UH variations..

G'day, Bringing up this thread for Wannacollect who has just shown a very nice Schrade Walden 153 UH. I believe we have now noted total of four examples of Schrade Walden's to date. The photos on page one of this thread show not only the handle variance but also blade grind, box and paperwork were all different as well to the Brown Box Schrade 153UH from 1973 on. My Brown box with the original 'Golden Spike' sticker for the 153UH is still the only example I have noted. Hoo Roo.

Great that there's another 153UH out there! Like fine wine, a classic never gets "old", just better.

just won this one and if no one claims it does that make 5?

will know more when i get it. unless someone is not being truthful it shouldn't be a forum member selling it. plus the blade is pitted from the photos and has not been cleaned. the sheath has been replaced for sure as i am assuming the Walden 153 sheath was the same as for the Schrade 153's? in the ad there was no mention of serial number so will not know til i get the knife. plus not going to correct seller on the handle material til get i the knive and will then ask for a providence when i do.

Well done Delmas!.....you have yourself the 5th identified Schrade Walden 153. Even without the tang stamping the unique S/Walden staglon handle pattern shows it to be the real deal. The original sheath for this knife is as shown on my first post in this thread, as my S/Walden set is all original Mint complete, with unique box sticker and bling. It will no doubt have cross guard number when you receive it....please show us when you receive.....you would expect most examples of this knife to show usage some 41 years after manufacture....Hoo Roo

GONGRATS Delmas!

just got it in and the serial number on it was 00438. not in bad shape considering the age of it. will take photos later.

While we are waiting for Demas' picture of #00438, here is my latest get. SW 153UH #00143. Does this make six now? Or seven?

No box, papers and... no sheath. The hunt begins.

Good find Codger, nice to know your there. What ever happened to "Old mate Larry303"

I'm still around...I put Codge onto this scarce knife as soon as it was listed...Forum rules didn't allow me to mention it while it was active....and it's a good rule....stops arguments and also allows a mis-described knife remain mis-described for the duration of the auction......well done Codger you paid considerably less than I had to for my Minty Walden Golden Spike Set...probably only seven now captured to date...the unique handle staglon marking is a dead giveaway to identifying a Walden Spike..as against the normal...first photo in this thread gives the comparison.....
G'day Ken...I'm about to leave for North of Kalgoorlie W.A. prospecting for GOLD!.......may never be heard from again.....no doubt my wife would put my collection on Feebay even before liquormortis set in......and no doubt sell them at the prices I told her I originally paid.....Hoo Roo

I hope you told your wife about those Old Timer 2 and 3OT you said I could have for $50 each.
Larry, can you email your new phone number, if and when you get to Kalgoorlie... Ken

I did forget to give Larry303 the kudus he deserves for bringing this knife to my attention. Thanks again mate.

I'm sorry guys, but I just had to resurrect this thread. I just love looking at these old 153's over and over. Especially if they are as rare as these Walden Uncle Henry's are. :)

Rare? How rare are they? What is the highest serial recorded so far? Maybe they are just uncommon, and as years go by more will sift out of the woodwork of closets, attics and estates. And collections. Larry303 had said he intends to live forever (and so far so good mate!), but I have known for some time that I am not immortal. Thus I am just a temporary custodian of this knife and others. Meanwhile, keep looking! I promise there are more where this seven came from!

Serial number range for the Schrade Walden 153UH so far;

00143
00220
00378
00438
00690
00773
01666
01857

These are all the serials we have identified as belonging to members here. Any more?

That adds another serial, now seven. So it appears that while the Walden marked Golden Spikes are not common 41 years later in any condition, nearly 2,000 existed at one point. It will be interesting to watch and see how high the serials go. And also the lowest Schrade marked serials in comparison. And I would still like for someone somewhere to discover the paperwork I remember (perhaps wrongly?) connecting the Golden Spike knife to the opening of the transcontinental railroad, 1869.

I believe you are correct about this, and I vaguely remember reading that too. It would be nice to see the paperwork surface to prove it. :)

There was an H-15 (a Craftsman) with a Golden Spike etch, and I know that Michael is aware of that, but no known paperwork there (yet), either. I don't see it being likely that there would be a 4 year spread between the railroad centennial and a knife etch, which would be the case if we are speaking of the 153 UH. BTW, some might enjoy this site:
