The Wonderous Whittler

Very nice examples folks.

Gev - The finer details in your example are particualrly interesting. Also, nice to see a sabre ground blade in there! (I'm guessing sabre and not a 'true' hollow??)

Interesting knife Gev, never seen that pattern. I have similar Schrade Walden

Great old knife. It is an old one, likely made late 1940's. A Schrade Walden NY stamping on all blades...

Here are a few examples of the same pattern.

Looking at the blades. You can see thicker master blades, and the use of catch bits.

Mike, yours is a dandy too, looks like an 837.

Thanks Scruffuk. Yes sabre ground.

Mike

What a beautiful piece, my friend! Thanks for letting us chicken eye it.

Always a pleasure to view you knives and garner your wisdom, Hal! Thank you sir. The older the better to me so I'm happy to know this one is.

Great thread idea Gevonovich, I wish I had more to contribute there are some nice examples here.

GEC Northfield #62 Courthouse Whittler in spring green serial #10

The only knife I ever cracked the bone, center pin mark side :-(

This cheap Taylor Schrade was less than $5 so I bought it new and sealed in box.

The bone and fit and finish is surprising nice, it says handmade? limited issue 2009? Has nice snap. I have a Taylor trapper that I tried to use for work but would dull after two cuts, so I've never carried this one.

I like the shield & the bone, maybe I'll carry it and see if it hold a edge any better than the trapper.

Gevonovich, I have the same knife in near mint condition with a clear "Everlastingly Sharp" etch with no EO notch for the coping blade and a ratty one too with no notch. I believe your knife was modified by a previous owner.

The Whittler pattern is my favorite, but I only have a few pieces.

And while these 2 aren't true Whittler patterns, they are called Whittlers. They are the same model knife, just made at different times. Notice the difference in the thickness of the main blade. I apologize for the picture quality, I shoot guns better than cameras.

I would enjoy reading your opinion on this one.

I like it very well. It is about an 8th of an inch shorter than my Yeller Case Medium Stockman, and a bit thinner as well. It has a nice walk and talk, with pulls a very acceptable 5 or so. I had to have the Beer Barrel handles, as I'm a fan of what they contained. :D They seem almost feather lite, and provide a good grip. I'm anxious to see how they look after a year or 2 of carry.

I've not done much whittling with it, mainly because I enjoy it as an EDC, and just didn't want to sharpen it at a lesser angle. It does get scary sharp, and I have no doubt it would perform admirably in that role.

I'd buy another one.

Here's a shot of the springs.

Thanks, I too like the beer barrel handles. I'm not a whittler, but find the split spring design intriguing. I had one, a very nice delrin handled Böker I got from FES in a trade, but at the time it was a bit bigger than I was comfortable carrying. I'll see if I can find some pictures of it.

Thx for the 'beer barrel' pics. It's a great looking knife, and I've come close to getting one, but the catalog pics I've seen don't do a great job of detailing the scales. Your pic makes them look much nicer than the mediocre pics I've seen previously.

3.5" closed

0.5625" wide

It was the width, not the length, that kept from carrying it at the time. Now I have three knives of that width that I rotate through carrying.

Yeah, I'm not scared of heights, I'm scared of widths. lol

Glad I could help.

Hi,

I only have one Whittler, a Queen. It is a very well made knife, but there is just something about it that prevents it from getting a lot of pocket time. I think it's because it doesn't feel as solid as a Stockman to me. The Queen seems a bit "light" to me.

My Queen,
