Mr. Shann's thread on shooting with his son caused me a bit of thought and memory.

Let's make a list of the practical things a father should teach his son. Stuff like:

How to shoot a gun.

How to jump-start a car.

How to open a bottle of wine.

How to sharpen a knife.

How to throw a baseball.

How to fish.

How to change a tire.

How to tie a tie.

I'm going to go with:
Change a flat
Do some basic home repair-I'm amazed how many men I meet that can't hammer a nail into a board, let a lone any real repair.

How about - practically everything?

Also, things a son should teach his father:

1. how to use all the functions on his mobile phone
2. how to programme the video recorder
3. what popular music is cool
4. what clothes are cool
5. how to get the best out of his PC

Andrew.

How to treat a lady
How to settle a dispute
How to be honest at all times regardless of the cost
How to Love
How to have a passion about something

Regarding 3 & 4 - chances are your idea of "cool" and your son's idea of "cool" are completely different. Probably the opposite!

My wife and I were talking about me taking Matt fishing and I said:

Give a man a fish, and you give him food for one day.

Teach a man to fish, and you teach how to sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

To do the best you can no matter how crappy the job is.

To help others even if others don't offer a hand to you.

How to properly smoke a real good cigar.

How to play poker and sit up straight if you lose.

Self respect and respect for other folks.

1. How to recognize a lady
2. How to take responsibility for his actions
3. Not to give up
4. Compassion
5. That beauty is only skin deep
6. The difference between Love and lust
7. To trust in God but try like hell.

A father needs to teach his son about the family's heritage. To many kids these days are clueless of where his family came from and who his ancestors were.

A father needs to teach his son moral values, ethics, and the meaning of hard work.

Yes, yes, those are all very nice. But what I'm looking for here is more the simple practical things, stuff like

how to start a fire in a fireplace using a couple of matches and yesterday's newspaper. And without the use of any product that comes in a shrink-wrapped package (especially shrink-wrapped fire wood).

how to grill a great steak. Even if he's not a cook, every guy should know how to grill a great steak. And you should learn it from your father, not from some guy with a fake accent selling secret seasoning on a TV infomercial.

That sort of thing. The simple, practical stuff that to many of today's "men" seem to lack, that's what I'm looking for here.

Ohh okay I get it now. Physical things, teachable things.

Well in that case: How to clean, fillet, and cook fish.
Outdoor skills

How to polish a pair of shoes with real polish not some super goo
How to iron your clothes so you look smart

How to pinch it at the top before you roll it down!! :D

I like Ren's the best.

How to be and why one should be a gentleman.

How to say "I'm sorry"

How to say "I messed up" (accept responsibility)

How to lose gratiously.

How a car works.

How to use and sharpen a knife.

How to shoot.

How to build a fire.

How to pitch a tent.

Believe in yourself.

Always tell the truth. Your credibility is priceless.

How to network.
How to suck up to powerful people who you despise, but have to work with.
How to tell who your real friends are (and aren't).
How to tell which women are psycho.
How to tell which women are sexually available, and how to make friends with them. (Unless they're psycho, in which case, how to stay away from them.)
:D :D :D

How to fry an egg. My dad taught me that when I was a kid, and it's served me very well.
