Found some ridiculously old cocobola scales in the cache…43 years old. Bought them from Paul Sheffield in ‘79. Figured it just might be time to use them. First wood in years, thinking I’ll be using some more in the future.
Longtime yard art welder, first time knife maker. Pretty much everything is homebuilt - forge, anvil, work table, belt grinder. I've done a couple RR spike knives but this is my first stem-to-stern attempt at making a blade.
Of course I took the dumbest (difficult) route, a stacked steel and copper billet...
I figure most everything I start out doing - the first few articles are practice anyways so I try all kinds of things to see what works and doesn't. Like: don't try to draw out a billet like this with a hammer - gets pretty messy. Don't heat it up so much to avoid the pitting and screwing up the brazes. Flatten the damn thing better!
I left one side raw and ground the other - man, symmetry is HARD! Lots and lots of mistakes but in the end, I'm not complaining.
This build a long thing on Instagram, I won't use any of the names or the guy running it because the rules here are weird, but its been fun. He sends you the template and its up to uou to do something that stands out. This is hollow ground Damascus core. Trying to figure out what im using for handle material.
