I think the dip with the choil would give you some decent control for fine work.

Thanks buddy, the handle slabs on the finished one will be around 6", slightly longer than on my drawing but still a little ways off the blade to allow for wider diameter wood to be battoned than the blade length alone would allow.
 
This is a more accurate illustration of how I want ther pommel end, except I want the tang slightly extended as in my drawing !
