xm-18 m390

M390 is a third generation version. Carpenter made 20CV for Latrobe (Duratech), 204P is considered a second generation.

Well, I just like that it is new and different blade markings and without the choil. I was comparing my skinner cutting edge with a BM 950 Rift and they are just about identical except the BM has more edge because of the choil on the XM. Practical difference? Probably not.

The choil is one of my favourite things about an XM, but there's nothing wrong with offering different things so that everyone has more choices..

We went with the most popular size and the main grind we liked the best. Unfortunately, they all have to be the same per run so we really couldn't do the 3" or another grind.

I understand from this that Hinderer is still capable of producing a 3-inch XM18. This is good as I was beginning to think that the Halftrack had filled the role of the smaller knife because I haven't seen any new 3-inch available.

The issue is, unless you are a collector, if I took all the markings off of the blades and gave you 3 (pick a knife) one with each steel, would you be able to tell the difference?

I realize this applies to many steels, but I can tell the difference between CPM154/S35Vn for example...

I don't want to be a negative, so don't take this the wrong way, just don't get the steel choice when you have had 20CV available for a long time, and the only other steel is S35VN....Why not do something mildly interesting regardless of whether this is a limited or production thing?

I guess no choil is an interesting/selling point, at least to some people, isnt it?

It is for me as I won't be doing any "delicate" work where I would need to choke up on a spanto. (If I actually use this knife at all, lol). The Spanto is one of my least favorite XM grinds actually. But obviously that's just my opinion as it's a very popular seller.

As a "limited collectable" this knife makes complete sense, and there's zero wrong with that.

I don't have an issue with 20CV, I've been perfectly happy with it over the years. There may have been some supply side issues with Latrobe. I don't consider any production knife a collectible.

I'm not a big fan of the choil on the 3.5". Also, keep in mind that the full working finish was not a regular production offering until this year.

There will be a run of 3" XM's near the end of the year.

Wow no choil is great, it's the only thing I really wanted changed on my xm18. Hmm do I sell mine to get one of these or not

I love my 3" warfie! Very expensive box cutter, but then again, I have never loved my $2.00 box cutter. Better to have loved to cut boxes then never have loved cutting boxes at all, lol

The wharny is great for some things, like breaking down boxes or cutting bags open. My other two 3" are slicers, I like the spanto in the 3.5" not so much in the 3".

Spanto only?

Yes, Spanto only. There is a minimum required number of blades they will do for this type of project so we had to just pick one.

I ordered the battle blue and black g10. Received my shipping confirmation this morning.

Do you know what hardness they were able to achieve with the m390?

I don't know but I can ask.

Any chance you can tell us a little more about these? Specifically, I'm curious as to what made you go to RHK and ask for this knife? I'm not a fan of choils, so I thank you for making this happen. I think a 3" slicer would be my first choice if I had RHK ear, but I can definitely understand the decision to go with the 3.5" in a spanto. I really appreciate the variety of colors and finishes offered as well.[emoji106]

Well we wanted to do something a little different with RHK. I had initially asked about doing a smaller run with different scales, pimped out hardware, etc. They told us if we wanted something done we'd have to step up to the plate and do at least 200 knives with the same grind but with various finishes. We thought it over and came up with something that we thought would be a little different but also sell well for us. I don't find the choil useful on this knife so we decided to get rid of that and use a steel they hadn't used before. Those two things were enough to get the go ahead from Rick.

They must be selling well. I can see that there are at least 3 color/finish combos no longer available. How many were available to begin with?

In this first batch we had 150 ready to ship.

I don't get it?

M390?

Already got 20CV which is identical, just Crucibles version....strange....

We're in the sales business. M390 is going to sell over 20cv 7 days a week and twice on Sunday. Not to mention all of the regular blades we've received for well over a year have been S35vn.

The issue is, unless you are a collector, if I took all the markings off of the blades and gave you 3 (pick a knife) one with each steel, would you be able to tell the difference?

If you're going to put up this kind of money on a project you're going to pick what should be a guaranteed winner, not what you think will be the most interesting.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate! Jade G-10 and full working finish for me. Probably gonna sell my 20cv spearpoint since I can't keep both.

I think this is a smart move, as long as they don't go crazy with a new exclusive every month like Spyderco is now doing. There has been at least 3 Spyderco para2 dealer exclusive/sprint run in the last two or theee months with more coming. With these being 3x the price of para 2 I don't think the market will be there. On the other hand Spyderco requires a minimum of 1200 units and seeing how there will only be 200? Of these it might balance out. Honestly I'm. It sure I'm going to use this one or not(even after swearing to myself I would never buy a knife I was t going to use) as s35vn is more then good enough for my needs.

I can't afford to own a knife I don't use.

I still haven't used my anthracite skinner I bought 2 weeks ago:) not sure I'll be able to bring myself to use this one either. At least for a while.
