Mike, my hat tips off to you sir. You got more people out there and moving! I tried to keep it going but:
Well looks like I"m out for a while. Grab a seat folks this is going to be a good one:
While playing in the basement with the kids (they were having a dance party), somebody turned on the treadmill without my knowledge. with the music being loud i did not even hear it on. that somebody set it to 10mph.......i notice the treadmill's display still lit up so i go over to turn it off. thinking its not on i go to step on it and have my feet taken out from under me. i use everything i have to get me up as to not land on the moving belt, that i pulled myself almost 1 handed up onto the safety rails. tore my chest muscle and partial ligament, full or partial bicep tendon tare lol. Worse pain of my life
have to go see my orthopaedic surgen. pain pills aplenty, today is going to suck!!
worst part i just started to get back into it with a mission
bah not a happy person.
Turns out after all it was a full pectoral tendon tare, torn deltoid muscles, and one of the heads of my bicep was partially torn. Six titanium screws and 3 pins later and we're back together.
I'm currently two weeks away from another surgeon appointment to see if I can get approved for full activities again. I'm going to physiotherapy twice a week, still working to get full range of motion back to my arm (I got about 70% back).
During my time off I've been doing reading into different ways to assist with weight-loss and fitness gains. The one program that I've been working on is due to a new set of research that was targeted towards diabetics. I'm not diabetic, but the results work for everybody. If you google 'intermittent fasting' you will get numerous articles to explain it all in details. The basics of this is you eat all your food for the day within an 8 hour window, and have nothing but water for the other hours of the day. This causes your body to go into a starvation preservation mode, and the body then burns straight fat for energy. Because of my schedule I choose to have my breakfast at 10am, Lunch 2pm, and Dinner at 5pm (finishing before 6pm). In my first week of doing this I dropped 4.5lbs, second week was slower but I was down another 2lbs, and this week looks like it will be another 2lbs. I haven't adjusted my portions (yet) just the times that I'm eating. The only time I've felt hungry is in the morning before my breakfast. I no longer have a morning coffee and that at times makes things a little difficult, but the results seem to be pretty good so far.
Another little bit of advice that I could give for anybody just 'getting into it' or starting up again is: GO SLOW! baby steps. Pain, or pushing it too far will just deter you from wanting to continue and / or actually set you back by increasing the chance of injury. Case in point: as soon as I was cleared for movement for my arm I was told I could start running again (after being completly inactive for 3 months). My first day back out I decided to do 5km and surprised the hell out of myself when I did it in 32min. It felt so good, the next day I decided to get a baseline of my maximum distance so I knew where I needed to start my training again. Just over 5 miles and I decided to call it quits because I still felt so great that I could go forever. The next day I woke up with a swollen foot and some tendinitis in my ankle. The wife and the Dr gave me the 9th degree and just had to remind me that I'm closer in age to 40 then I am 20 (I'm 33). Dr wanted to put me in a boot for two weeks, but told me that I should just hold off training until I could go two days without pain.
Yesterday I ran 2 miles and rollarbladed 4km with the dog. Giving my lower body a break today (maybe
) and only going to stick to my arm exercises
Ultimately my fitness goals have never changed, it seems like I just have to get over this giant hurdle before I can continue, and it will take me that much longer to get that beachbody
I'll be checking in to this thread if anybody is looking for any little advice that I can help with. Feel free to look me up on Facebook if you have it and want to PM me (Tim Lievers). At one time in my life I was a certified personal trainer
I'm not in: But I wish all of you the best of luck!
On a side note: has anybody seen or heard from CrimsonFalcon in a while? he kinda dropped off, just wondering how he's doing. It was his inspiration that got me back on track after a long while off.
