On a 4 day solo sailing adventure aboard Serena ⛵

This morning I navigated to the Foley Conservation Area and went for a very nice hike to the lookout at the top.

The blade points to where Serena is on the beach snd the tip of the sheath to the lookout

Wow! You are really taking advantage of the season so far! A 4 day trip with your wife, and now a 4 day trip solo :D:thumbsup:.

I took “The Green Heron” out again today, and saw a couple of its namesake critters:

I saw this one catch a fish, which was cool:

I also saw a cormorant and some snowy egrets, but didn’t get any pics.

I timed my trip back downstream, and figured that in the sluggish current of that part of the river I was going roughly 1.7 mph. That information should help me plan future one-way trips.

Seneca Creek was crowded with people taking kayaking lessons and such, and the golf course on the Virginia side of the Potomac had loudspeakers blaring some sort of noise. Next time I will pick a quieter spot further upriver to put in.

Thanks Tom.
I’ll likely spent most of my vacation days a little st a time on “ extra long weekends “ outdoor therapy 😊

Awesome to see you enjoying your Green Heron 👍
Cool pics 😎

I am now inside Serena’s belly lol ready for the night
A few more from today.

Most excellent outs and abouts Dan, Tom & Jack. I've been staying close to home. My wife is down with quite a terrible cold and I haven't the ambition to venture too far afield without her. :( Still thinking about what "boating" for us might be this summer. We are retiring the 45 year old Cape Dory Typhoon sail boat after 20+ years with me aboard - longer with my wife - her boat from the start. No alternative yet. Might just need to get a kayak or a canoe to bridge the "dry" spell.

Great weekend folks!

Meanwhile - local woods walks are part of every day. Only have this puukko to show for yesterday's little trek.

Great weekend folks!
Thanks Ray, I hope your wife is well again soon :) That's a handsome puukko :)

Some pics from my stroll yesterday :)
Muy lindas fotos amigo :)

Hope Elaine is feeling better by now Ray !

Wishing you find something/anything that floats to get on the water this summer  😎

I am back home safe and sound after my 4 day solo sailing adventure on Serena.
On day two I dropped my fishing rod overboard and it sank to the bottom
A little improvisation on day 3 saved the day :)

On the last evening of my little solo adventure I was feeling VERY tired and running low on food.
I could tell that I was slower to react to things and felt a sort of brain fog.

That night I didn’t bundle up enough either and felt cold at times which affected my sleep.

I got up at 5:30 am yesterday and started drinking coffee… by the third cup I began to come out of the fog.
And I just sat inside Serena’s belly drinking coffee and reading my boat's manual lol 😂

The winds were forecasted to be 10 knots with gusts to 16 kn so I changed jibs for a smaller one and practiced reefing the mainsail.

FINALLY by 10 am I was ready to go out for one more short sail and head home 🏡
Just then an unexpected visitor showed up

She kept looking at me, so calm with and “almost” sweet face.
I was mesmerized !!!

And she hanged around for a while as if looking for a friend
😊

And then she dove deeper and was gone
👋

I proceeded to untied Serena and as I was about to come aboard she came back as if to ask me not to leave just yet.

Entranced by the encounter I came closer for more pics
( notice anything amiss with Serena’s mooring lines ? )

When I looked back Serena was GONE
😱

I turned around and there she was … like an angel from heaven, the skies opened and beautiful rays shining gloriously on her halo
😇

raPnN1j.jpg

I quickly removed “most” of my clothing
🤪
and jumped in the water to swim to my gone astray Serena.

It was at this time that it dawned on me that a “ dinosaur “ was swimming not far from me.
I had the thought that perhaps it was all part of that evil creature’s plan and now I was about to become a meal for that hideous reptile
😧

The reboarding ladder worked as advertised and I was soon safely inside Serena’s cockpit, started up the trusty Honda and docked on the other side of the docks

The sudden cold water immersion and the adrenaline rush made me feel so alive
😄

So off I went on one last sail in strong conditions.

Glad to be alive I shattered my low carb diet protocols and got me the biggest ice cream at the park store to celebrate this adventure

It sounds like only thing missing from your nautical adventure is an encounter with pirates 🤣. I’m glad you got Serena back without getting chomped on by that snapping turtle…

Also - awesome fish pics .

What a great story Dan. You were seduced by the sweet face of a snapping turtle to untie your boat and cast her adrift AND to swim as potential food for her and the kids. Snapping turtle as SIREN. :p You never stood a chance.

But first she decided to fatten you up - get you off your disciplined diet. Next time she will follow through and get her Canadian on - er - I mean in. Keep your wits about you.

After all though crisis averted. Good save. This time. 👍

Great post Dan, quite a story for sure! 😄👍

I went to scout out a campsite for possible overnight boat trip later this year, hopefully. This is the view from where I would pull ashore to access the campsite:

The river is shallow and fairly swift through there, and should be easy travelling.

It would be a short trip, but I don’t want to overdo it on the first test run.

I hung some flagging in a tree to help find the spot:

I hopped off my bike on the way back to my car for a quick knife photo:

When I got home I made a pole for my boat - these waters should be perfect for it.
