Photos A Walk in Nature

CelloDan CelloDan , glad you two are still taking walks together. Prayers for many more walks together.

May God bless you both for many more beautiful and snowy outings. Keep your blades and your mind sharp.

Good to see you two getting happier and healthier with each passing year! :)
You are an inspiration.

Blessings Blessings Blessings on a FULL recovery!!!

As always, I am grateful for the kind words of encouragement gentlemen !!!
On my X-CUT TRAIL this morning before heading into the shop. A beautiful and comfortable 30° F day on the mid-coast.

That bench is looking awesome Ray
Great to sit down with a thermos and some yerba mate and just chill 🧉 ... and a knife of course to give pointy ends to a few dry sticks and pretend we are whitling something ☺️

The weather here has been very mild in the last couple weeks.
The cross country trails are ruined at the moment and the ice trails are fighting to preserve the ice. The next few days are forecasted to be even milder so they have announced that the ice trails will close to preserve the ice they got and hope to reopen next week.

The groundhog in our area announced an early spring a few days ago. Gracias Willie :)

Looking forward to walk those same woods now covered in white snow but covered in white trillium flowers instead :)

We had lovely family walk along the river this afternoon. The temperature was a record breaking 7 degrees celsius.
The paved trail had no ❄️ on it and we walked in our running shoes. Had we not checked the calendar we would had thought it was April.

Theme for the walk: Plants and berries lol ☺️

Count me jealous of all the great pictures. I can’t get out for very long right now because I have to be close to home to take care of my wife. Got this picture while out walking the dog, my favorite hiking and backpacking country is in view. To give you an idea of geographic relief, the peaks on the right are 12,000’ above town and the peaks on the left are 13,000’ above town. I’ll get up there this summer.

Here too Dan - temps in the mid-40°s F, aka 7°C (close enough). A February thaw? No berries or sumac where I've been walking but the trails are pretty well free of snow and ice. Deeper in the woods at the vernal pools - these ice patterns caught my attention today. No idea what created them. There is no evidence of vertical tree sections in the relatively shallow pool. Pretty cool (yes ;)) and mysterious.

Just a short 5-mile walk along the canal this morning.
Looks so nice I am sure the thought of pulling Green Heron out of hibernation crossed your mind Tom :)
We were VERY surprised to to see a couple of fishing boats on the Saint Lawrence last Saturday on our walk, something we do not recall ever seeing at this time of the year.

Such a beautiful setting for your backyard ! Breathtaking!
Wishing you the very best as you care for your wife.

Here a detail photo. The knife is my newest. Maine maker - calling it the BAKER BROOK, aka BBK1. Yes, there is a resemblance to a famous knife model - especially here on BF. One of my favorites so I asked my friend to make a cousin. This one out of Lacewood and 1095 steel.

Beautiful shots of nature and very cool knife Ray !
What knife does it resemble ?

In 2012 I turned one bowl out of lacewood. I remember it soaking a great deal of finishing oil. It was not an easy wood (to me) to deal with to avoid tearing the grain.

Here is a pic of such bowl with my new Criollo who is begging to go and meet the chickadees :)

I'll see if others can guess Dan. It's not an exact copy but it surely borrows the basic profile and dimensions. More later...

WOW - you went FANCY on us with your new CRIOLLO. Will you just stuff that in your belt for dress up occasions - DON Cello DAN? 😁

I hear that Lacewood has issues but the maker stabilized these scales under pressure and I think that made it more workable - like micarta. The maker was very happy to use it. Was his idea. I like it very much. Your bowl is quite a beauty. 🥰

Don CelloDan 🤔 ... I love it 😁

You just tapped into my childhood number one hero of all time and my lifelong alter ego of Don Diego de la Vega and Zorro 😁
Remember that Zorro always fights for justice for the poor and downtrodden ☺️

Me too LOVE LOVE Zorro -since I was a little kid. Even just last week I watched (for the 3rd time in a decade) and enjoyed immensely the last of the Legend of ZORRO movies with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones. CZJ has been a secret love for a long time. 🥰 The kid in the movie was great too and a wonderful element of humor. I know this 2 part series including the first with Anthony Hopkins are campy and exaggerated but I still thought them great fun. The sound track alone is worth the watch.

Zorro, a tough act to follow. 🤔

We're having another exceptionally warm week here. Yesterday, the warmth prompted a jaunt in the woods. I chose a path I had not previously walked, in an area that was one small haller holler after another for the first mile. At the bottom of some of those hallers holler was a small pond.
Here's the first pond I came across. I called it "Silver Pond".

Eventually I came to a pond large enough to be considered a lake, I named it "Hidden Lake". Difficult to show in a pic, so I tried a video, which I couldn't get to post here. Since I've run out of time, you can click on the link, it'll take you to the video on Imgur.

I had with me three companions that regularly accompany me on walk-a-bouts...

a pocket tool,

a handy little fixed blade...

...and "Spalted Staff".

A very enjoyable afternoon, can't wait to go again. :)

GLad you enjoyed a beautiful walk along with your 3 companions James
THe link for the lake view worked for me
The snow and colder temps have returned here, at least for a few days so I was able to go xc skiing today and burn off some of the pent up cabin fever :)

I am a bit ashamed to say it but I did not bring any knife with me ☹️😊

edit: what is a haller ? Google is not helping lol

Haller is my misspelling of the word holler. A holler is a valley, depression or concavity of the land. Holler is the word hollow as pronounced in an Appalachian dialect. In that dialect, words ending in an "o" sound are at times pronounced with an"er" sound. Such as winder for window or tater for potato. I picked it up from a co-worker who said he grew up in a Mississippi holler.
I won't mention the absence of a knife to anyone, since I'm certain it was simply an oversight, Dan. 🤔

edit; thanks Tom, ya beat me to it.

Are you just messing with my brain James ?
Remember that it was originally wired in Spanish 😁

You’re welcome. And for what its worth, I think that Dan guy is an OK feller :thumbsup:.
Gracias hermano 😊

Magic moments on the trail ! Beautiful ! :)

Time to start looking for antler sheds ~

There is a very nice handle for a knife or a tool in this main beam

Nice-handle-potential-PORTRAIT.jpg

Upon closer inspection I think this one is from last season. A few tines were well chewed but mostly there is quite a bit of mold growth, in general and including on the chewed sections of the tines. I'm pretty certain that the mold would not have taken hold so soon in this winter cold especially after the mice have had their fill.

Nonetheless - the hunt is on for this years crop of sheds.

Between my misspelling and the different dialects spoken in various areas throughout the USA, it can at times be challenging to communicate, especially in the written word. I apologize, but it wasn't intentional. From now on, I will do my best to write in the most universally recognized form of English.
BTW, in High School a couple of teachers tried to rewire my brain to speak Spanish... it didn't take. Que tengas una buena noche, amigo mío.
