Amsterdam Meet 2016 Report of Spyderco Prototypes

I am a Lum Chinese Folder addict, so the new Lil’ Lum will definitely go on my wish list. It is a very small folder, but even with its right-handed clip (I’m a lefty) I could easily manipulate it. The Lil’ Lum does have a much curvier edge than its medium- and large-sized brethren in the Spyderco line-up. I do think the black G-10 is a bit too basic for an elegant folder like this. I hope this one does well for Spyderco, hopefully well enough to warrant a run in a more interesting handle color.

The Ouroboros did remind me of the Dialex designed Junior folder, but the Ouroboros has its own character. It’s a very light design, that folds up in a nice small oval little package. This should make the knife a great EDC design. The handle and choil make for a big grip, guys with big hands should have no problem with this compact folder.

Now, I'll have to get back to photoshop to prepare a new batch for tomorrow, thanks for watching!

Can you comment on the action of the Compression-lock on the Ouroboros?
Was it like a PM2, or more viscous and not as free-swinging like the Junior?

Wow, that time of year already?!

Thanks as always for all the great pics and insight.

As always, I add my thanks to you! You do us all a great and artful service each year with these pix and comments. And thanks, too, for adding your opinion about the handle material on the Lil Lum. I really want one (love all the Lums) but that black G-10 just doesn't work. Can Spyderco still produce knives with Almite handles? That would be nice, or micarta for a knife of this size and elegant design. Even ti...

Thanks again for taking the time to do this every year, Paul! The Ouroboros looks great. Can't wait for the rest of this year's knives.

Mr. Blonde as always thank you so much for taking the time to do this!! I always look forward to this every year as I myself cannot go personally. So again a big thank you for your time and effort to do this for all of us!!

Im definitely looking forward to the ATR!! Ive always wanted one but they are vintage and expensive...and Id probably never use it because of those things. But now I can have one and actually use it without feeling guilty!! WOOT WOOT :)

You will be busy with scales for the ATR id imagine.

As always Mr. Blonde thank you very much for doing this! Your post-Amsterdam meet threads are the best threads on Bladeforums hands-down! I look forward to them every year!

Another cool Byrd to get a nice upgrade to full titanium handle scales. It might not come off in these pictures, but the production quality is very impressive. If you like Byrds, this is a very nice compact EDC option.

The Reinhold Rhino is a compact little folder with a wicked cool bowie-style blade. I could (just) get a full four-finger grip on the compact handle. The ergos were great though. The G-10 grip was finished rather smooth, it appeared sanded down but the surface still offered some grip. The handle scale that also holds the clip, features a type of ‘subhilt’ feature. It really helps to lock the knife in your hand, but at the same time I kept reaching for a linerlock that wasn’t there when I wanted to close this knife. Still, I liked the Reinhold Rhino a lot.

The Rubicon has gotten a diet, this G10/CF version is definitely more pocket-friendly than the first version. The handle scales are flat and the knife’s handle has been ‘dehorned’ to make it much easier to carry and draw. The handle’s surface still offered some grip, kind of like a smoother peelply finish. Still, I’d like to see the jimping on the spine to be a bit sharper, but it’s the same finish as was used on the original Spyderco Rubicon.

Thanks Mr. Blonde, this is my most anticipated thread of the year. Truly appreciate the time and effort putting this together. Beautiful photos of beautiful knives.

Really like that updated rubicon, though it is not a knife for me, the blade is too thick and not slicy enough.
