Here's an old Dunlap axe. This was my first hang a few years ago, but it's held up fine.

3.5lb head
4.5in edge
33" handle

Justin Gingrich started making knives under the name Ranger Knives, tomahawks as well. Ontario then started a Ranger line of knives, Justin's designs. Now, you can still get knives and hawks from directly from Justin Gingrich, like the Renegade hawk. Like mine....

Hey Lee, I assume you made that handle, the 34" sounds powerful. Or, did you order it from Justin that way? I have a 36", 3 lb, double bit axe, and man it has power. Sometimes I feel that the Renegade is almost too much weight for the haft it came with, for a fighting hawk. I can choke up, but you loose power again. Now, for chopping wood, I bet you are right on the money, with the added length. I might have to try that at some point, I like the cane idea as well.

Yup, I made them from upside down sledge hammer handles. I made 4 of these handles for my hiking/camping hawks, 1. WarHammer 2. TrailHawk 3. HammerHawk 4. Ranger Renegade Hawk. They are all great tools.

Here's my Pathfinder hawk, from Wilderness Outfitters. Dave Canterbury gets em from Two Hawks. Very nice, lightweight Hawk. I carved the front of the handle flat and burnt it over a fire. The steel is very tuff and holds an edge a long time. Comes finished with a deep gun metal black, xtra cool. And heavy duty leather edge cover and belt loop.

Nice job. Have you cut much wood with it? I know you said you hung it a few years ago.

Thanks, yeah it's been my main splitter for sure and I use it to chop limbs too. I take it on canoe trips when I need a bigger axe as well. The edge is actually holding up way better than I expected. It's just another testament that there really wasn't bad steel back then.

I guess we can't get this thread stickied? Well, this is my last hawk. My Trail hawk after weeks of sanding and sore fingers. I thinned the blade like a knife and it cuts deep and fast on a 34" handle.
