Carothers and Guns

I get that and also have a soft spot for the original versions but I really do like the upgrades that have been made to older technology. The new hi vis sites, factory rails, polymer stocks and foregrips, coupled with both tube loading as well as side gate upgrade and the threaded barrel make it a nice breath of fresh air in a modern rifle world. The tried and true are still being made but maybe the updates and accessories will keep levers around and relevant to a new upcoming group of shooters for years to come.
I totally agree that the newer tactical versions offer nice options, but for my own personal likes in a lever gun is being sleek, easy to handle, nimble, and great for scooting through brush/alders. Great sights and ammo access are always welcome.
I got an email today showing a POF levergun with 20 round (9mm) stick magazine. To me it just looks cumbersome and for $1750 I would rather a different gun altogether.

Agreed.

A big reason that a lever gun appeals to me is the gun grabbers don't think it's scary. Slapping a stick mag on it makes it susceptible to certain bans. Plus, at $1750 it's a hard pass in my book.

Some of the wording I have seen on proposed magazine bans is scary. Some were only detachable mags, but some were written that tube magazines were not exempt if capacity was more than 10 rounds. I think of one of my porcupine rifles- a Rem 572BDL .22 and it would be on the banned list. Really nuts.

I should clarify no bans proposed here thankfully! 😃

Hey thanks Alexei604 Alexei604 ! Those are the Buffed Double Red Canvas scales. I applied a fresh coat of Ballistol just before that pic which gave it a nice shine. All the credit goes to Nathan, Jo and the gang at Carothers 😁

I find the Double Red quite classy 🎩

BTW-- on the second page of this thread Jo posted an image of all the scale options, in case you were interested.
I saw this picture, thank you, they look special on the knife and your checkering is different

Yup - sometimes a tool is just a tool. And while I also own a couple classic Henrys, this Model X project wasn't really about, "I wanna build a 'tactical' lever gun." It was really just a purpose-driven build with a couple specific reqs I had around the idea of an all-purpose camp gun for the part of the world I live in:

1) It needed to be a stout caliber, sufficient for large animals.
2) I needed to be able to mount a light and an optic on it, as large animal encounters in/around camp often happen in low light.
3) The ability to have additional ammo on the gun itself was a bonus.

The stock Mod X got me close, but not ideal as far as mounting options, so the RPP handguard was a no-brainer and easily allowed me to do everything above that I wanted to. Of course, this setup is applicable to some other situations too, such as a backcountry truck gun when I'm out rambling about and scouting, etc, but it really started with the "camp gun" concept. It's not a "tactical" gun per se, and I kinda hate that word anyway. ;)

Being able to personalize a gun to be purpose-built is great. I am glad your setup has worked out for you and I appreciate you sharing it.

Finally caved on a .357 recently. Fun gun to shoot!

Just a heads up…. A gunsmith who I purchased sights/grip for a 629 from has been corresponding with me regularly regarding handgun carry for outdoors. He has been developing a chest rig in addition to a belt holster, that he feels will be an excellent alternative to available rigs. He has asked me to do a use/field evaluation, which I am excited to do. I will keep y’all posted when it arrives and what my thoughts are after putting it through some paces.

madcap_magician madcap_magician I'd start with the can, then work back from there. Right at 6 months on the form 4 which is around average now. Form 1 is much shorter. If you change your mind on the MP5 there are other options like the MCX or APC9K 😆
I actually have an SBR'd MPX, it was my first and so far only tax stamp. But, you know. MP5.

Every singe Cold War fan must have MP5. lol
I recognize that roller delayed action are most reliable , but it’s too heavy and today SIG made the one of the best gas system. It’s lighter, reliable and cheaper. I’m MPX guy, no doubt. My friend got palmetto ak9 or something like that. I’m think about it as well. Looks like a shit, but shooting very well
