Read somewhere the woodsman was made in canada.Have come across several different types of ridged eye heads lately and have been wondering if there all from the same place,the four ridge eye ones are all over in fit and finish.Just got a dayton that only says true temper on it that has four ridges and have a hatchet has the same stamp that doesnt have any.

Looks like that is the cracked Legitimus, big Jersey pattern.

This is the cracked one.


I think the other one has a bevel? That is the one I was looking at.


Either way, they both have cool lugs. I would have been tickled to find either one!

You are right the poor Legitimus is the one cracked.
I wanted to show it, i feel like i remembered a head you had andbthat you repaired having a similar crack placement. A beautifully done repair and finish work.

That bottom one looks a lot like my Kelly Perfect.

I have to clean and look closer but i believe you're both are right here.
I could make out true temper, earlier today in sunlight.

No pics yet but I got a Plumb national boy’s axe on the original (wrecked) haft for free along with a Husqvarna 371 carcass, also free. The Plumb weighs in at 2lbs 5.8ozs and only has one small ding on the edge of the poll.

That was this little Flint Edge it was cracked, all the way through the eye, top to bottom.

Not my weld but it is nice.

Thanks for reposting that. Its a beauty and definitely lends me hope that i can have this one repaired similarly.
I will do the finish work, but would need a willing and able welder.

I need to run out and check, i think the crack is the side opposite the stamp. Hope.

Thanks squarepeg, I feel lucky to be able to get into and touch so much history each haul. The real drive for me...i want to save as much as i can...

Day one in hillsville for the swap meet, not the best haul for 150$ but they use almost exclusively 20's and 5's,
60 on the husqy splitter, 23 for the vice, 25 for the wrench and two side spokeshave, 20 for the James swan but roll, 15 for the Cooper's shave, 1 for the card scraper and 1 for the forge material, I mean uhh rasp

Man what a great haul!! I have been looking for one of those extra large spokeshaves for a long time! You did great man! Good for you!!

yeah man they're usually really expensive but i got it from a jblyttle type guy, someone that knows the real value of tools so i didnt mind shelling out 15 for one with a broken but functional iron

That's always such fun! Those are quality axes and they cleaned up nice.
What's the stamp on the top right axe? Collins? I always use my phone and I can't zoom in enough to see it. You've got some hanging to do!

I really like that cast iron handle. @Old Axeman 's idea to use tapered drill bits for removing wedges influenced my decision to buy those two.
