Working closely with Busse Knife Company we have developed a heat-treat protocol that allows SR-MagnaCut to achieve performance levels that are ideal for the intended task of this design. With a hardness of 61 - 63 Rc, you can rest assured that the Galley Rat will hold an edge in the most severe of camp kitchen tasks. Our proprietary heat-treat protocol, featuring deep cryogenic cycles and Transversion Wave tempering destroys the old adage that, "Knives that hold an edge forever, stay dull forever". The Galley Rat's SR-MagnaCut steel has been optimized for ease of re-sharpening and long-lasting edge retention.

Given the choice I definitely would have gotten Black Micarta on the first release. But I’m not mad. This blade is so useful and wicked sharp. I gladly ordered a second.
 
The website shows a pic of the dark black micarta AND one with a much lighter color handle. Is that to suggest you might get one with the darker black or you might get the lighter, more salt and pepper black micarta?
 
The pics are the same knife. In one pic we left the Micarta dry and in the other pic the handle has been rubbed with mineral oil. Exact same knife. If you like the lighter material just don’t oil it. If you like the darker look then simply apply mineral oil or similar and it will darken up.
